Sign Up Now for The Church Has Left the Building Community Service Projects
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
St. Andrew's 'The Church Has Left the Building Community Service Day' is coming soon!
Join us as we go out into the community on Sunday, September 19, effectively "being the church" instead of "going to church."
We will have over 10 service projects in the Pearland/Alvin/Friendswood area on that day.
If you have not yet signed up for a project, here is your chance to do so. Several of the projects we have planned are listed below. If you would like to join one of these projects, please reply to me at debbie@standrewspearland.org and I will add your name to the list.
Please note all projects have a maximum number of participants and we will sign people up on a first come, first served basis.  Don't worry, we have plenty of other projects to go around - we will find a place for you.
You can also sign up for projects on Sunday at the church (we will have the full list up on the bulletin board in the Worship Building).
Don't miss out on this chance to be a part of an amazing outreach event!
In Christ,
Debbie Allensworth
New Adult Class - Marriage
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
imarriageStanding at the altar, we all had a picture of what our marriage would look like. The problem is this picture of marriage results in expectations that we unload on our spouse. The weight of these expectations will rob your marriage of love and joy. As a spouse you never feel like you measure up and you never feel like you are good enough.

So what are you to do with your expectations? You can't deny them, because most expectations started out as God-given desires. In this series, Andy Stanley explains that you must learn to transform your expectations and look to God if you are to experience marriage as it was designed. DVD and discussion. Jim+ will facilitate. Christine will keep him honest!

Starts, Sunday October 3rd for 6 weeks

Women's Bible Study
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi, ladies!
On Thursday evenings, starting September 16th, we are starting a Women's Bible Study at St. Andrew's!
The first study we will do is a 10 week study called 'Esther - It's Tough Being a Woman', by Beth Moore.  I recently did this study at Gateway Community Church, where a friend of mine is a member, and I enjoyed it so much that I would like to share it with you, and learn even more from it.  I have never truly looked forward to sitting down and reading my Bible like I did during this study.  She made me so excited that I couldn't wait to see what happened next and how it could apply to my own life.
Not only will the bible study itself be wonderful, but this will be a great way to stay connected with each other!
The time will probably be from 6:30 to 8:30, but we may adjust that based on the preferences of all those who plan to come.  We will watch the video for the first 45 minutes or so, and then break into small groups to discuss the lesson in detail.
Here is a link to a brief video overview of the study:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjJSpFJU22c
Childcare will be provided!
Please invite any and all friends you think might enjoy this study - we will make sure we have plenty of room for everyone!
Let me know if you have any questions! Please reply to this email and let me know that you are interested so I can make sure to order enough books for everyone.
Believe me, ladies - this bible study is worth the effort to make it to!!   I am so excited to hear from you!
Love,
Jennifer Sitton
New Adult Class - Old Testament
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Beginning October 17, Fr. Joe's class will begin a 24-week course on the Old Testament.

The DVD lectures are by Professor Amy Jill Levine, PhD, of Vanderbilt University Divinity School.  This course is a scholarly introduction to how the Hebrew Bible was produced over a period of perhaps eight centuries, what it meant to the writers and editors over this long birth, and what meanings it may have to modern Christians and Jews.

The cost for the 24 classes is $15.00, a real bargin considering what a Graduate School course costs. The home work will be reading in the Old Testament.
Thanks to...

Jenny Vittingl who recently retired from 17 YEARS helping in the office!  Bless you!

Christian Stewardship
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Christian stewardship is the free and joyous activity of the child of God and God's family, the church, in managing all of life and life's resources for God's purposes."
The above definition of Christian Stewardship has been used in our church for a few decades.  It contains only 29 words, but what a mouthful when you consider the application of the various parts of this definition.
"Free and joyous."  Many people do not think of stewardship as being free and joyous but it really can be when we have the calm assurance that our God richly provides all that we need for the support and wants of our body and life.
"Child of God."  What a beautiful title for God's people!  The opening verses of 1 John 3 speak of the lavish love of God resulting in making us His very own children.  What great good news and what a powerful reminder of the proper motivation for our stewardship activity - love to our God who first loved us.
"God's family, the church."  This phrase reminds us that our stewardship is not a solo performance but is done within the Christian community to honor God and benefit others.
"In managing all of life and life's resources."  Part of our stewardship struggle is that we think we "own" all those things that surround us when, in truth, we are managers.  Another part of our struggle is that we may think that Stewardship is just about money, time and talents.  Christian stewardship is about those things and more; Christian stewardship involves our whole life--everything that God has entrusted to us to manage as faithful stewards.
"For His purposes."  Maturing stewards do the right things for the right reasons.  All we do as Christian stewards is to be done to the glory of God and for the welfare of others as well as ourselves.  Who said stewardship was easy?  If it were, everyone would be doing it!
