Resolutions for Our Year of Service

Christianity is practiced. These are traits of the followers of Jesus. God encourages our practice of them and God will help us to do them. Make these the foundation of your Year of Service. (from sermon 2/14/10)

Avoid judgment of others unlike me. Find out who they are and what they yearn for
James 2:1-6

Die to live. Take care of Jesus' business with others outside family and church. God will take care of you.
Luke 9:23-25

Sow generously. Give of your time, talent and treasure to make the Gospel a reality in the lives of others.
2 Corinthians 9:6-7

Don't take it with you, send it ahead. Invest in eternity. It is your ultimate destiny.
Matthew 6:19-24

Embrace variety, Live in unity. Work together to be the Body of Christ for a broken world using your unique gifts, given by God.
1 Corinthians 12:4-12

Year of Service Update
#12
June 18, 2010

Dear St. Andrew's Family & Friends,

Thank you all so much for your support of the St. Andrew's Year of Service. So many of you have come up with wonderful ideas of ways to serve your neighbors, community and those in need around the world.

When we embarked on this journey I hoped many would be inspired to find somewhere to serve. What has truly impressed me, though, are the ideas coming from the congregation that allow others to become involved with acts of service as well.

So far we have packed Care Packages for the Homeless, sent items to Mexico for children in need and for the next 2 weeks, we will be collecting reading materials for nursing homes and assisted living facilities in our area. None of this would have been possible without ideas from people just like you. So, if you have an idea, please share that with me or another member of the staff and we will see if we can find a way to make your service project a reality.

Thank you all for your continued service to others. Please send in pictures so you can continue to inspire those around you.

Meals on Wheels Serves Those In Need

YoS MOW Chris

For over 20 years, community volunteers have been delivering fully prepared meals to senior citizens and the homebound in the Pearland area. It has allowed many individuals to remain independent in their own homes rather than having to move to a care facility.

St. Andrew's provides drivers for Meals on Wheels once every 8 weeks. We need two teams a day for a week to deliver meals.  We are always looking for new members of our Meals on Wheels team either as a regularly scheduled driver or a substitute driver.

  Service in Action

  • Elijah Clendening held the door for someone at church on Sunday
  • Aaron Murray is volunteering at M.D. Anderson
  • Debbie Allensworth read to the Pre-K 4 class at Lutheran South Academy each Friday this past school year.

 Helping Out At School

YoS Balberg School

Kathy Balberg volunteered one day a week this past school year at Westwood Elementary to help Trinity and Camden's teachers (Mrs. Huckabee and Mrs. Countie).
Sponsoring Missionaries in the Dominican Republic

St. Andrew's is supporting Michael and April Floyd in their mission work in the Dominican Republic. Their work in theological education in the Caribbean region is very much needed and the financial support of St. Andrew's and many other individuals and congregations makes this work possible. The Liberatore family is one of the families supporting the Floyd's Ministry through financial contributions.

Michael and April are in their 3rd academic year in the region. If you would like to find out more about their ministry, please visit www.floydsinthedr.com where they post occasional updates.

Collecting Reading Materials for the Elderly

Lisa Hardin is organizing a drive to collect gently used and new magazines and books for people in nursing homes and assisted living facilities in our area. If you have items to donate, please bring them to St. Andrew's between June 20-27. There will be a collection box outside of the Worship Area.

Boredom is the number one complaint of many people in nursing homes and we hope that this collection will go a long way in helping to alleviate some of that concern.
Bogo Lights - Sharing the Light!

homer

The Woodward family brought us this information on Bogo Lights - a buy one, give one chance to purchase solar powered flashlights - they send you one and one goes to someone in the world who needs light.

The Woodwards bought one a few years ago and sent one to a school in Africa.  Then they bought several for relatives and their donations went to another place in Africa.  Recently they bought one to go to Haiti.

Roxie reports:

"We liked ours before, but when we were ike'd we really came to appreciate it.  It's solar powered and really does recharge itself in a day.  The light is really bright.  The batteries last for several years and are cheap to replace.  The company is based in Houston. The places ours went to don't have electricity, especially in homes.  Kids can't study after dark or use dangerous kerosene lamps.  The school our first light went to had walls made of tree limbs with gaps on purpose so light could come in."
