SUMMER VACATION

Our vacation season starts this week. Hurray! This summer, keep St. Andrew's with you.

Take a vacation from work and school but not from God. Worship here when you are in town. When you are away, bring us back the leaflet and other welcoming stuff form the churches you visit.

Please keep your giving current. Summers are a tough time for a church. Giving often drops off and does not catch up again till September. Our financial commitments to our vendors and payroll do not go down in the summer.

If you have specials needs due to the stresses of travel, summer expectations, and a lot of family "closeness," please call on me or Joe+.

I have you and your families in my prayers. I pray you have a safe and very enjoyable summer.

PRAYER REQUEST UPDATE

Friends,
I want to give you an update & urge you to continue praying for little Dorothy & her mom, Heather & the rest of the family. A couple of weeks ago, Donna & I visited them at the end of their first inpatient chemotherapy session (4 days). Dorothy acted like any other active 2 year old. It was so gratifying to see her. I am so thankful for the healthy children in my family! She was walking & talking & wanting to play with the gifts we brought. Tomorrow they have the next body scan to determine if the chemo has halted the metasteses. Continue to pray for this family. Thank you.

Blessings to all & hug your kids,
Irene Taylor

RECYCLING

Cans -
Every time you are ready to throw out that soda or other beverage can, remind yourself that you are throwing away money that could have gone to the Work Campers. Every aluminum can counts. You may drop off your collection in the old kitchen. We are collecting all the way through July. So please recycle the cans!

Ink Cartridges - Reduce pollution, and raise funds. Most of us have inkjet printers at home or work. When you have an empty cartridge next time, do not throw it away-just bring it to St. Andrew's. We have a special recycle box in  the Foyer of the Family Life Center.  St. Andrew's is paid up to $4.00 for each cartridge.

STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE

Survey developed... A newly named Strategic Planning Committee has already set to work, announcing that its first step will be to solicit opinions from throughout the Episcopal Church.

The Strategic Planning Committee was established by Executive Council in January 2009 to develop a strategic plan for the Episcopal Church Center and the Executive Council which addresses mission and ministry, growth, finance, challenges and opportunities, issues and concerns, and to map a way to address all these topics.

The survey will also be available to be completed at the Episcopal Church Center booth at General Convention in Anaheim, California July 8-17.

The deadline to complete the survey is July 28, 2009.  Spanish and French will be available shortly. For more information see News & Notices: http://www.episcopalchurch.org/newsline.htm

AMAZING GRACE
ag2
John Newton was a slave trader in England in the 1700's. He was an Anglican (Episcopalian) and wrote, in collaboration with his priest, Amazing Grace, one of our most beloved Christian songs. Through an amazing relationship with his wife, Newton came to realize that, as a result of his work as a slave trader, only God's grace could save him. Ultimately, Newton fought to abolish slave trade.

On Sunday, July 26th at both services, all the music and the sermon will be devoted to Amazing Grace. We have a number of versions - bagpipes, brass, gospel, modern, new age, Celtic, Native American - of Amazing Grace for you that day. Bring your friends.

Also, at noon that day, there will be a showing of the movie, Amazing Grace, about John Newton. Lunch and childcare will be provided for those who request it. To request this, email Jim+ frjimbo@msn.com.
SAFEGUARDING GOD'S CHILDREN CLASS

You Need to Take This!

Do you fall into one of the following categories (Yes, you do!):

1. Have a child, grandchild, niece, nephew, younger brother/sister ...
2. Want to help with Children's events
3. Work with children here at the church (Rock U., God Rocks!, Youth Ministry, Acolytes, Children or Youth Events, Vacation Bible School, Workcamp, Pumpkin Patch...)
4. Work with children outside the church
5. Care about the children around you even if they're not yours
6. Want to help us make St. Andrew's a safe environment

I'm sure there are even more, point is, this class is for every one of us! We require Safeguarding God's Children for anyone who works in any way with our children and Youth at St. Andrew's, but we also want to encourage those of you who have someone you care for who is a child or youth to come and take the class as well.

Parents, congregations, church leaders and clergy can all benefit from Safeguarding God's Children. It is a program geared to preventing and responding to child sexual abuse in everyday life and in ministry. It is well worth the time for both you and your child!

We are offering an easy option for taking this class. On Sunday, August 2nd from 9:15-noon we will be teaching Safeguarding during the normal Christian Education time and through the 10:30 service. We will be bringing communion into the classroom for those who usually attend the 10:30 service.

We will also offer the class on Wednesday, August 5th at 6 pm for those who can not make the 2nd.

To sign up for one of these classes or to find out other times the class will be offered, please contact Cheryl Royston in the church office at 281-485-3843 or cheryl@standrewspearland.org.

In the Hebrew scriptures there is no word for "spiritual." And Jesus never used the phrase "spiritual life." Why? Because for Jesus and his tradition, all of life is spiritual. But what does that really mean?

Come to Everything is Spiritual, a DVD presentation tying science and spirituality together.

"...this captivating, humorous look at the physical world and at human existence as body and spirit will help you start engaging the churched and unchurched, high school students and beyond, who have serious questions or interest in how science coexists with spirituality." - Youthworker Journal

NEW CLASS - NEW MATERIAL

Fresh Donuts and Coffee!

The Great Adventure explores a man and his world beyond the everyday. The 20-session study puts the roof on the house of masculinity and creates a vision for a man's future and destiny. This study will help men rediscover the adventure in life through a greater understanding of who they are. Men will uncover the uniqueness they have as a man and discover a satisfying life focus.

It will challenge men to consider several important questions they are continually asking themselves:
"Who am I?"
"What are my life dreams in life?"
"Do I have courage to pursue those dreams?"

It also introduces a tool, Your Unique Design™, to help men better understand their makeup, who they are, what their natural strengths are and the types of environments in which they thrive.

During the year each man will have the opportunity to take the online personality inventory, Your Unique Design™.

Never has another manhood curriculum challenged men to live life to the fullest like The Great Adventure.  It will take them on a journey that leads to significant personal discoveries about who they are and where they are going in life.

NEW ADULT CLASS ON SUNDAY MORNINGS (9:15 AM)
borg 2
Beginning on September 13, 2009

In highly accessible language, author Marcus Borg explores what it means to be an authentic Christian in these difficult times.  Says Borg, it's not primarily about believing the right things or even being good.  The Christian life is about being in relationship with God which transforms us into more compassionate beings, "into the likeness of Christ."  The class will provide the tools to talk about Borg's new vision for a life of Christian faith and how it can change our spiritual lives and Christian communities today.  The purpose of the class is to be a time for growth and mutual learning between the leader and all the participants. Sign up by e-mail to frjoe@standrewspearland.org, or call 281-485-3843.  Participants will be asked to purchase the textbook, and read it!

Text:  The Heart of Christianity, by Marcus Borg, Hundere Distinguished Professor of Religion and Culture at Oregon State University, and Chair of the Historical Jesus section of the Society of Biblical Literature.
