I don't know about you but, when I get going, I
often lose sight of exactly where I was headed.
The only thing that will last in my life is my
relationship with God. That's eternal. I want to
spend eternity being loved. God will do that. All
this earthly stuff will pass away. Most days,
however, are geared towards getting a bunch
of tasks done that, if I examined them, I would
find few get me closer to heaven. In fact, many,
while not bad in and of themselves, will keep
me busy with very unimportant things that get
me off track. It is the tyranny of the urgent.
Heaven actually gets further away in all my
busyness.
Simple tasks, the crises of the day, and pressure
from our surroundings crowd out my journey to
the eternal. I wind up majoring in the minors.
That is, I focus on things that really do not
matter but are manageable or pesky. Even well
meaning friends and family can draw me from God.
Activities that should bring some meaning to my
life take over it. There is a Filipino saying to the
effect that Westerners wear their god on their
wrist. What can I do?
Although it is counter intuitive; take time. God
made the 24 hour day and even he could rest.
When I take time to reflect, I can sort through
what is urgent (and often expendable) and what
is important (and often points to heaven.) The
heavenly road is paved with the "important." I
know that when worship and prayer become
expendable, I am aimed away from my heavenly
goal. Loving God in these ways is often what we
drop first. Heaven slips away. Eternity any place
else is not acceptable. God aim me towards
heaven!
Stop. Just stop. Ask yourself. "What is urgent in
my life and what is important?" "Who or what,
though well meaning, is dragging me down?"
Then stay stopped for a moment and ask? "God,
how can I love you more?" Tell God that you
need help in order to get to heaven. People who
stop and reflect actually have more time to major
in the majors. God sees to that.
Never forget that I love you and pray for you and
gently nudge you towards heaven. Feel free to
nudge me back. The world may be crazier than
ever today but our God can handle that and,
with his help, so can I (and you).
See you Sunday.
