| CARE CALLERS |
|
|
Care Callers are St. Andrew's church members who have a passion for people and wish to assist me in the pastoral care of our church. The ministry of our Care Callers is to call families just to check in. They care about how you are doing and will let Fr. Jim know of any needs that may arise in the conversation or any good news to share. There is no pressure in these calls. The important thing is that people care. As always, if you have a need you may call Fr. Jim or Fr. Joe. How frequently a family is called depends on the number of Care Callers. If you wish to be a Care Caller, contact me. If accepted, I ask that you Are coached by me, if needed Are passionate about people and our church Commit to making 2 calls a week Keep confidentiality Report within a week back to me If you are called by a Care Caller, be cordial and enjoy a call of someone who cares about you, no strings attached! Your Care Caller will identify herself or himself as a Care Caller and will ask How are you and your family doing? Any special events or milestones in your family? Prayer or Thanksgiving requests? Anything you would like to pass on to Jim+? Any questions you have about St. Andrew's? Any changes in family information (phone, email, etc.) The call will be short. Our first Care Callers are Nicole Adams and Elizabeth Fields. If you have any questions, please let me know. Jim+ frjimbo@msn.com 281.485.3843 |

Special Thanks to Darrel Borden who spent hours after Work Day to pressure wash the church. Thanks to Mia Magness, Merv Taylor, Donna Musick, Larry Musick and Bobby Nicholls our Shrove Tuesday cooks. We had a record 131 Shrove Tuesday diners!
I wanted to thank everyone that participated in the work day this past Saturday. We had over 70 items on our list and we cleared almost all of them. Many of you went above and beyond expectations. I cannot thank everyone enough. Rest up for a next work day in the fall.
P.S. - Some tools were left at the church. Please contact me if you are looking for yours.

|
Cans - Every time you are ready to throw out that soda or other beverage can, remind yourself that you are throwing away money that could have gone to the Work Campers. Every aluminum can counts. You may drop off your collection in the old kitchen. We are collecting all the way through July. So please recycle the cans!
Ink Cartridges - Reduce pollution, and raise funds. Most of us have inkjet printers at home or work. When you have an empty cartridge next time, do not throw it away-just bring it to St. Andrew's. We have a special recycle box in the Foyer of the Family Life Center. St. Andrew's is paid up to $4.00 for each cartridge. | |

| DID YOUR TEAM WIN? |
|
|
Alas, my favorite racing team did not this past weekend. Neither 24 nor 48 were in the winners circle at the NASCAR Sprint Cup at Las Vegas. Rice did win all its baseball tournament games. The Rockets had one gigantic meltdown in the 4th quarter to lose.
But my favorite team is The Church. The Bible describes us as a team. It describes how each one of us is needed to do the things God has in store for us to do. To do things for our own good and the good of others. God uses His Team, The Church, to work His miracles in the world. The healthier our team is, the more we work together, the more we get on the same page by studying and worshiping together, the better life is.
Everyone is needed. God does not leave anyone out. No one possesses a gift that is not part of His Big Plan to renew the world. God has built into your life time for your Team.
Today, with people dwelling on bad news and looking for quick answer (of which there are none,) our Team is more important to ever and you are critical to its mission. You need your Team to be there and your Team needs you and your gifts. There is a tendency in hard times for a family or individual to isolate themselves and hunker down. The Bible says this isolation is deadly to our spirit and the Team renews it.
The world is depending on our Team, St. Andrew's, to win. God has no Plan B. Suit up this Sunday as we continue our Lenten Journey. If things are tough, call me and let's get together. You are critical to abundant living for everyone. Regardless of the times, and they may be terrible or great for you today, God delivers. He is our Hope.

| LENTEN SUPPER AND WORSHIP |
|
Lent is the time of the year we devote ourselves more full to God, especially by taking on extra time in the bible, in worship and in acts of kindness. Typically, Episcopalians had weekly Lenten Suppers. I am asking us to make room for God our busy schedule and to take just one Wednesday out for God and our spiritual life. Join me for a Lenten Supper and a short Worship time on Wednesday, 3/18 at 6:00 pm for dinner with worship to follow. A simple supper and childcare is provided. I hope to see you there. Lenten Supper and Worship 6:00 pm Wednesday, March 18th Please RSVP so we know how much food to prepare Jim+ frjimbo@msn.com |
| POUND CHALLENGE UPDATE |
|
|
Our Lenten team of weight loss conscious disciples has had their first official weigh-in.
We total 2,755.4 lbs.
We have a total pledge of $8.45/pound lost. The proceeds go to the Food Pantry at St. Vincent's House, the Episcopal relief agency on Galveston Island that had 12 feet of water during Ike, wiping out most of its operations. They are getting back on their feet but could us our help.
After the first week, 3 of us did gain weight! BUT, more lost. We have a net total so far of 17.6 pounds lost. So, our total contribution to St. Vincent's House now stands at $148.72.
If you wish to donate so much per pound, email Jim+ at frjimbo@msn.com or sign up on the "Pounds Lost" board in the entryway of the church.

| THE PEOPLE'S SERMON QUESTIONS FOR GOD |
|
|
The sermon on April 19th will be one like you have not had before. You determine the content! I am asking you to send me questions for God. During the sermon time, I will address as many as possible. What I would like are real questions you have about real spiritual and life-application issues. I will be more likely to address questions that can be answer in a brief reply as opposed to weighty issues like abortion, poverty, or capital punishment, which take considerable time to develop. I am more interested in what you need for your life (the person who poses the questions will not be publicly identified) in the way of spiritual guidance or questions. I will address as many as I can. I will say that many "Why does God...?' questions have no answer. We are in the faith business and God often does not tell us "Why?" and, instead, asks us to trust that he is good and cares. Send your questions to me at frjimbo@msn.com or on a note in the offering plate. Please give your name so I can follow up if I have questions. As always, I am available to meet with you about any pressing spiritual issue. Jim+ |
| ADULT SUNDAY MORNING CLASS |
|
|
They Like Jesus but not The Church 6 week Sunday morning Adult Class for Lent Many people today, especially among emerging generations, don't resonate with the church and organized Christianity. Some are leaving the church and others were never part of the church in the first place. Sometimes it's because of misperceptions about the church. Yet often they are still spiritually open and fascinated with Jesus. This is a ministry resource book exploring six of the most common objects and misunderstandings younger generations have about the church and Christianity. The objections come from conversations and interviews the church has had with unchurched twenty and thirty-somethings at coffee houses. Each chapter raises the objection using a conversational approach, provides the biblical answers to that objection, gives examples of how churches are addressing this objection, and concludes with follow-through projection suggestions, discussion questions, and resource listings. If you care about church or your kids or the next generation, try this class out. DVD class with discussion. $20 with book. $5 without

| SECOND SUNDAY EVALUATION |
|
|
Almost a half a year ago, we embarked on an experiment in Worship - Second Sunday. On the second Sunday of each month, we offered a specially designed evening (6 pm) worship service for those who did not or could not worship on Sunday morning. This was to be a six month experiment and we would evaluate it afterwards to see if Second Sunday should be continued, discontinued or expanded. Why did we do Second Sunday? The answer is threefold · To give people who must work on Sunday a
chance to worship · To give people who are out-of-town on weekends
a chance to worship · To give people who want to sleep in on Sunday a
chance to worship · To develop different forms of worship · To appeal to more worship styles of our
parishioners What did we hope for (in order to continue or expand Second Sunday?) · A sustained 35+ in attendance · New avenues for spiritual growth of our current
members · New ideas to incorporate in Sunday morning
worship · Over 50% of those in attendance having not
worshiped on Sunday morning · We would get new visitors · We would be successful enough to expand to more
Sundays and, maybe, even to find a venue in west
Pearland for this service So, how are we doing? Here is a scoreboard. The reviews are mixed, but still have promise. All so far have been communion services. Try one out. We will decide the future of this service this spring. 9/14/08 Ike - no service 10/12/08 Extended Reflections Service 29 in attendance 6 visitors 50%+ did not worship in the morning 11/9/08 Celtic Service 40 in attendance 0 visitors 50%+ did not worship in the morning 12/14/08 Christmas Pageant 128 in attendance 20+ visitors 40% did not worship in the morning 1/11/09 U2charist Service 85 in attendance 12 visitors 50%+ did not worship in the morning 2/8/09 Emergent Service 14 in attendance 0 visitors 50% did not worship in the morning What's next? We will go at least through May. 3/8/09 - Celtic 4/19/09 - U2charist (third Sunday due to Easter) 5/17/09 - Confirmation (third Sunday due to Mother's Day) Have these services helped in your spiritual life or in getting away or sleeping in? Send your comments and questions to Jim+ at frjimbo@msn.com. |

| WHAT IS THE PULL TAB PROGRAM? |
|
|
The Ronald McDonald House of Houston has been
involved with the pull tab program for six years
now! This recycling program is a fun and easy
way for St. Andrew's to become involved with
RMH. The Pull Tab Program brings in an average
of $8,000 a year to RMH!!
Pull tabs DO NOT support medical treatment of
any kind; however, pull tabs DO support the
operations of the Ronald McDonald House of
Houston. This includes purchasing food for the
family food pantry, cleaning supplies, and
providing van transportation for the families to
and from the Texas Medical Center.
Although a simple pull tab may appear to be
insignificant, it is in fact the most valuable part
of the can. Unlike the rest of the can, the tab is
pure aluminum and therefore generates the
most money from recycling. So, when you recycle
your can for our Workcampers (you are recycling,
right?) save the tab for RMH. A milk jug is in the
office for this purpose. You can drop them in the
ffering as well. |
| SUMMER CAMP AT CAMP ALLEN |
|
I did 12 years of summer camp at our Episcopal
Camp, Camp Allen, near Navasota in the piney
woods. Camp Allen is a great place. Kids from
going-into-3rd-grade through high school can go.
We have camp applications in the office. Contact
or come by the office. You owe it to your kids
or grand kids to give them a Camp Allen memory. Link to Camp Allen
