RECYCLING

Cans -
Every time you are ready to throw out that soda or
other beverage can, remind yourself that you are throwing
away money that could have gone to the Work Campers.
Every aluminum can counts. You may drop off your
collection in the old kitchen. We are collecting all the way
through July. So please
recycle the cans!

Ink Cartridges - Reduce pollution, and raise funds. Most
of us have inkjet printers at home or work. When you have
an empty cartridge next time, do not throw it away-just
bring it to St. Andrew's. We have a special recycle box in
the Foyer of the Family Life Center.  St. Andrew's is paid
up to $4.00 for each cartridge.

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING
sUPER BOWL OF CARINGIt's time for the Souper Bowl of Caring Food Drive and Christian Helping Hands is asking for help again this year.  The Super Bowl is on Sunday Feb 1st and the food drive will take place on Saturday, Jan 31st and Sunday, Feb 1st.  We will
be asking for volunteers to work a shift at the HEB's,
Kroger's and Randall's those two days so save some time on your calendar.

But for now, the "HEB Plus" at FM 518 & 288 is asking
for help in filling bags to be sold.  This can be done during
the day, in the evenings or on weekends to fit your
schedule.  You will be working in a back room where they have the items ready to be bagged up.  I did this last year and I know several of you did also.  It was a fun job
and you can work a couple of hours or more depending on your time schedule.  This HEB store sold well over 2,000
bags last year and they are off to a good start already.

Call "HEB Plus" at 713-578-6100 and ask for Anna Bryant to schedule a time to help out bagging up the food.  You can also email her at s0638c@heb.com and
cookiepea@yahoo.com
If you email her, send it to both of her email addresses.

Thanks for helping Christian Helping Hands again this year!

TOP 10 REASONS VOLUNTEERS QUIT...
...or Fail to Perform their Services
by Dr. Don Simmons

1. A sense that their service is not valuable.
2. A sense that they do not matter as a person, only as a "worker."
3. A sense that their contribution is not as valid as others.
4. A lack of community.
5. A lack of connection with a bigger purpose.
6. Poor leadership and management.
7. Poor communication/direction.
8. Lack of appreciation.
9. Failure to recognize them as a donor.
10. Lack of development of them as a person. Dr. Don Simmons says, "We don't have a recruitment issue with volunteers. We have a retention issue."

Giving volunteers the information, tools and resources they need shows dignity and trust. But volunteerism is not all
work and no play.

"Give people a nurturing support system, a sense of community and fun," Simmons adds.
PARISH WORK DAY

Saturday, Feb. 21, 8am to noon

We need each parishioner to donate at least 1 hour toward helping maintain our 2 buildings and campus.

Sign up after each service or contact Ed Woodward at 281-728-8961 or ed_woodward@comcast.net.

Youth Ministry News

"On Axis" is back!

Youth in grades 6-12 are invited to the Solomon's Porch
Coffeehouse (located behind the blood center on 518) to
partake in a bible study program called "On Axis".  Each
week the group will discuss various applications of
biblical principals in pop and modern culture and how that
impacts our decisions. Each person is responsible for their
own drink/food item at the porch. Also, you'll need a bible!

SCHOLARSHIP FUND FOR CHILDREN & YOUTH

Did you know we have a scholarship fund for children and
youth available for Diocesan and church sponsored events?
This fund was started in 2008 and is intended to help those
with a financial need by covering a portion of the cost of
just such events. If your child is interested in applying for
this scholarship, application forms are available in the
church office. If you would like to donate to the fund,
envelopes will be in the Sunday leaflets on monthly or you
may drop a check in the offering plate and note in the
memo line that it is for the Debbie Allensworth Scholarship
Fund.

SUMMER CAMP AT CAMP ALLEN

I did 12 years of summer camp at our Episcopal Camp,
Camp Allen, near Navasota in the piney woods. Camp Allen
is a great place. Kids from going-into-3rd-grade through
high school can go. We have camp applications in the
office. Contact Cheryl at Cheryl@standrewspearland.org
or come by the office. You owe it to your kids or grand
kids to give them a Camp Allen memory.

BRAZORIA COUNTY CITIZENS CORPS

Brazoria County Citizen Corps responds to Homeland security events like Ike or a flu epidemic. You can train to be a volunteer. Roxie Woodward is one. She is going to the local 2/9 Refresher meeting (see below). She would love to have you join her or to tell you about getting registered to help.

Happy New Year! Live each day for Christ.

Jim+

Get Prepared In the New Year!

The Brazoria County Citizen Corps wishes you and your
family the best in the New Year. We're off to a quick start
to get you and your family prepared for 2009.

Homeland Preparedness Project, in cooperation with the Brazoria County Office of Emergency Management and Brazoria County Citizen Corps Council, is initiating a series of VERY IMPORTANT meetings in January.

All volunteers must attend ONE of these meetings to get all
of the latest information about the Citizen Corps programs.

We are making a lot of changes based on lessons learned after IKE and need your help to make our County a safer place to live. We will discuss the following at each of these meetings:
·        Status of MRC and CERT in Brazoria County.
·        New Missions for MRC and CERT.
·        Upcoming training and projects.
·        Making the programs better for you.

These meetings will meet the requirement for a refresher for those who have been involved with CERT or MRC for two years or more. If you have not previously attended training, this will serve as the required Orientation for MRC.

The required ICS classes, IS-100a and IS-700a, can be
taken on-line at www.training.fema.gov/IS. If you have not completed IS-100a/700a, we will talk more about how you can complete this important training during the meetings.

Homeland Preparedness Project will provide light
refreshments during these meetings.
