community garden article

The Community Gardeners have been busy this month getting out into the community and assisting with gardens.  We spent one Saturday clearing out six garden beds at the John Adams Middle School.  Volunteer gardeners removed the old plant material, added soil, compost and mixed so they are now ready for spring planting.  The Community Garden program assists the Science Magnet program providing assistance with planting, maintaining and harvesting the beds as well as assisting with monthly seminars with the teachers and students.  We also have partnered with the SM Boys and Girls Club to get two large planters up and running.  As with JAMS, volunteers spend an afternoon clearing the old plant material and adding compost to the soil to prepare for planting.  The plan is to return in a couple of weeks to plant seeds and seedlings with the boys and girls of their program who will then maintain and harvest the food for their use.

cal recycle check your number for oil changes  News You Can Use: "Check Your Number"

A new public service campaign that encourages people to look up the recommended oil change interval for their cars instead of defaulting to the old standard of 3,000 miles. Did you know that with today's new technologies, many car makers confirm automobiles can now maintain top performance with longer space between oil changes? So it makes economic and environmental sense to "check your number" and be sure you are not changing your oil too soon, creating unnecessary waste of money and resources. Check your owners' manual, or simply click on  www.CheckYourNumber.org
to easily find out for free the recommended time to change the oil on most vehicles made from 2000-2012.

 Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce

1234 6th Street

Santa Monica, CA 90401
www.smchamber.com

The Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce advocates and represents business' interests and issues affecting the community. They provide an environment to help Chamber members prosper and succeed through a proactive working partnership with all levels of government and community organizations to achieve a healthy local economy and quality of life. As an active partner of Santa Monica's Green Business Certification Program, the Santa Monica Chamber hosts a monthly Environmental Affairs Committee meeting that coordinates an annual Sustainable Quality Award event, and they recognize Green Certified Chamber members in their annual Business Guide publication.

The Santa Monica Chamber walks the green talk in their own office by reusing materials left over from various events.  The staff kitchen is stocked with durable kitchenware like silverware, mugs and plates. Paper products such as printing paper, napkins, business cards and letterhead contain post-consumer recycled waste. They stock organic coffee and compost the used grounds in employee gardens. In line with their commitment to support local economy, they procure services and items exclusively from local businesses including hotels, restaurants and Farmers Markets. Their office demonstrates indoor and outdoor water saving practices - artificial turf along the front sidewalk eliminates landscape maintenance and lowers water bills, and an atmospheric water generator in conference room provides ample purified drinking water during committee meetings. The Chamber office is also located near major Big Blue Bus routes.

Check out and "LIKE" Santa Monica Community Gardens new Facebook page!

With the popularity of community gardens continually on the rise in Santa Monica, the waiting list

continues to grow and outpace available plots.  With no new community garden site planned in the City in the near future, staff has been looking for other opportunities to get gardeners growing and one such opportunity is the Garden Sharing Registry. The concept is simple: gardeners looking for room to grow opt-in to the registry; property owners in need of help to make the most of their available land choose a gardener from the list. Together they establish the terms of their partnership from length of time, frequency of gardening, plants to grow, and cost sharing. As an innovative way to meet community demand, this program is a win-win for the City because it encourages social interaction between the community members, addresses recreational needs, and meets sustainability goals.

To date, nine partnerships have been formed. Interested gardeners and property owners can contact the Community Recreation Division at (310) 458-8573.

The Bike Center has two locations. The primary, staffed location is at 2nd Street and Colorado Avenue, and the secondary location is at 4th Street and Broadway.

To promote the use of non-auto transportation, and bicycling in particular, the City built a Bike Center in its downtown core near the future terminus of the Exposition Light Rail Line. The facilities are located in two Agency-owned parking structures (Parking Structure 7 at 320 Broadway and Parking Structure 8 at 215 Colorado).  The Center is intended to provide secure bike parking and a variety of mobility services, including retail, bike repair, bike rental, attended bike parking, public information on alternative transportation, and additional related services. The Center is operated by an independent contractor.
