"People can make their Back-To-School purchases count even more this year," said Linda Greenberg Gross, Executive Director at SMMEF. "What many people don't realize is that for every $100 spent in Santa Monica, $45 stays in the community. That figure jumps up to $68 when we shop at a locally-owned independent store. Buying locally really helps the schools. Everyone can contribute just by buying what they need right here in Santa Monica."

Santa Monica Green Business Certification Program
| |

The Green Business Certification Program is a voluntary program that encourages businesses to implement proactive actions that are good for their bottom line and the environment. The Santa Monica Green Business Certification Program is a collaboration between the City of Santa Monica, Sustainable Works, Chamber of Commerce, Convention & Visitors Bureau, and Santa Monica College, Small Business Development Center, to recognize businesses that meet the City of the Santa Monica's resource efficiency standards in the areas of Waste Reduction, Energy and Water Efficiency, Pollution Prevention, Sustainable Procurement, and Transportation Management. For details of the required and optional measures businesses must achieve, visit www.smgbc.org/gettingstarted.
Featured Green Businesses for the Month of September:
Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel is a newly renovated luxury resort located in the heart of Santa Monica. This chic and contemporary beachfront property offers outstanding service and amenities, as well as a long history of environmental responsibility. Going the extra green mile, Loews is now the first luxury beachfront hotel in Santa Monica to become Green Business Certified. The Green Business Certification (GBC) program is a growing network in Santa Monica that is helping to improve th local economy, and the city's quality of life. Commercial businesses, located in Santa Monica with a
minimum of two employees, are eligible to participate in the program thatrecognizes businesses that have gone above and beyond in their sustainability efforts. The Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel features eco-friendly materials such as low-VOC (volatile organic compound) paint throughout the facility, as well as systems that promote water and energy efficiency (i.e. exterior lights that turn on when the sun sets, and turn off with sufficient daylight). To reduce paper, Loews sends information to potential customers on flash drives so they can be viewed without printing. And, combining the best of nature and nurture, the Loews' 7,000-square foot Ocean Spa & Fitness incorporates green building and design elements, with signature organic treatments and spa products. Loews was one of Santa Monica's first hotels to participate in the city's food waste recycling efforts, and the hotel's produce comes from local companies and the Santa Monica Farmers Market. Loews initiated a food composting program back in 2007, and excess food is donated to local charities such as Meals on Wheels, reducing the amount of waste sent to the landfill. Social responsibility is also a priority for Loews. The hotel gives back to the community in many ways including donating excess uniforms, bedding and supplies to the Ocean Park Community Center. Santa Monica's Green Business Certification (SMGBC) is good for two years at which time a company can re-certify. This year both the Sheraton Delfina Santa Monica, and The Ambrose have renewed their green certification, and their commitment to sustainability. SMGBC is a unique collaboration between the City of Santa Monica, the Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Chamber of Commerce, Small Business Development Center at Santa Monica College, and Sustainable Works, a non-profit environmental education organization. Now in its 5th year, SMGBC recognizes Santa Monica business that have incorporated sustainable practices, and significantly reduced their environmental impact. The City of Santa Monica hopes that consumers will show their support for the program by frequenting businesses that display the GBC decal in their window. Click here for Loews Hotel green certification highlights.

Garden Sharing - A Winning Partnership
|
With the popularity of community gardens continually on the rise in Santa Monica, the waiting list continues to grow and outpace available plots. With no new community garden site planned in the City in the near future, staff has been looking for other opportunities to get gardeners growi ng and one such opportunity is the Garden Sharing Registry. The concept is simple: gardeners looking for room to grow opt-in to the registry; property owners in need of help to make the most of their available land choose a gardener from the list. Together they establish the terms of their partnership from length of time, frequency of gardening, plants to grow, and cost sharing. As an innovative way to meet community demand, this program is a win-win for the City because it encourages social interaction between the community members, addresses recreational needs, and meets sustainability goals.
To date, nine partnerships have been formed. Interested gardeners and property owners can contact the Community Recreation Division at (310) 458-8573, or go online for more information.

Volunteers Needed for Community Garden at John Adams Middle School
|
Last year, a partnership was created between our community garden program and JAMS Science Magnet program on campus. The garden is hoping that the program will continue to grow more successful this school year and is in the process of recruiting more volunteers to assist. We need to get the 6 beds back up in good order - soil added, amended, etc. The school is planning to do the first seminar with the kids in early October and start planting, so it would be ideal if we could get volunteers ready to go prior to that seminar.
In you are interested in volunteering, please contact Wendy Pietrzak at (310) 458-8573, ext. #1. |

Santa Monica Celebrates "A" Water Ratings for All Santa Monica Beaches and "Whale of a Deal"
|
At Santa Monica's press conference, Santa Monica Mayor & Coastal Commissioner Richard Bloom introduced a "Whale of a Deal" for the public, the first 1,000 people to order on www.ecoplates.com will score a standard Whale TailŪ Ecoplate for 50 percent off ($25 instead of $50) or $25 off a personalized plate ($73 instead of $98) plus two tickets to a California aquarium. He also announced the names of the design contest winners who are Painter Elizabeth Robinette Tyndall of Bethel Island in Contra Costa County, and Graphic Designer Bill Atkins of Laguna Beach in Orange County. Actress and supporter of Heal The Bay, Amy Smart also spoke on behalf of Heal The Bay as one of California Coastal Commission's grant recipients. Also in attendance were travel industry partners, local dignitaries and non-profit organizations.
As one of the largest California Coastal Commission grant recipients, Heal the Bay uses the funds to manage and coordinate more than 600 cleanups annually along the Los Angeles County Coastline, from Malibu to San Pedro. At the cleanups, Heal the Bay staff collect 9,000 data cards annually, documenting the types of debris collected to demonstrate how much trash is found on each beach.
Named "Top Ten Beach Cities in the World" by National Geographic, Santa Monica also celebrated its "A" ocean water rating for all Santa Monica beaches. The improvement in water quality is a big score for Santa Monica, a progressive and proactive beach community. Santa Monica Convention and Visitors Bureau facilitates an annual Beach Summit which has been the catalyst for a number of beach improvements in Santa Monica including trash valet service on the beach during summer; adding service enhancements to Perry's Beach Cafes; the passing of Measure V by residents and voters in 2006 to raise revenue for urban runoff management; replacing beach restrooms with a focus on added amenities, safety, cleanliness and sustainability; and establishing a police and neighborhood "beach beat" with additional security cameras and lighting at the beach for safety.
