City of Santa
Monica News-
2010 Sustainable City Report Card Released
| CLICK HERE FOR REPORT CARD
Sixteen years ago, Santa
Monica adopted the Sustainable City Plan (SCP), a
challenging set of goals to ensure the long term sustainability of our local
economy, environment and quality of life. In order to track the progress in meeting the SCP goals and to guide
future actions, the city has developed two important tools: the Progress
Report, an up to date on-line database that provides comprehensive data
analysis; and the Report Card, a summary of the data in easy-to-understand
grades. The 2010 Sustainable City Report
Card was released in September 2010, and needless to say, Santa Monica continues to make the grade. The 2010 Report Card highlights improvements in almost every
sustainability goal area and notes several successes over the past year. Some of the notable successes include the
following: * Water
Wonders:Water demand dropped in all seasons for the past three years. * Solar
Success: Solar capacity has more than
tripled since the launch of Solar Santa Monica. There are 183 grid connected
solar projects in the city generating over 1.4 megawatts of solar electricity * Market
Madness: Sales are up 4% at four
thriving farmers markets that provide fresh, locally grown and organic produce
to nearly a million visitors each year. * Safer Soap: By
not purchasing antimicrobial hand soap, the city keeps almost 1,000 gallons of
triclosan-containing soap out of the community and the marine environment
annually. * Cool Carpools:
Average vehicle ridership increased from 1.59 last year to 1.64 this year
exceeding the Sustainable City Plan target. * Biking is Big:
Bike lanes on city streets increased by 11% and the number of people riding to
work increased 13%. * Pedal Parking:
This year the bike valet program parked more than 25,000 bikes for free at
community events around the city. * Community
Commerce: More than 200 businesses have joined the Buy Local Santa Monica
campaign and demonstrated their commitment to our local community. * Local
Leadership: Twenty one businesses were recognized for their exceptional
commitment to sustainable practices through the Green Business Certification
Program and the Sustainable Quality Awards. * Total
Trees: The combined size of the
community forest grew 2% this year. * Housing Hope:
The city added 248 units of affordable housing in 2008, nearly 50% of the total
new units completed. An additional 290
affordable housing units were completed in 2009. * Creating
Community: More than 4,000 people and 60 community groups took an active role
in shaping the future of Santa Monica
by participating in the update of the Land Use and Circulation Elements. * Environmental
Education: An additional 820 people began integrating sustainable practices in
the urban environment by participating in the Sustainable Works Community
Greening Program bringing the total participants to more than 5,000. * Homeless
Help: The number of homeless people in Santa Monica dropped 8%
between 2007 and 2009, while the number provided services rose 7%. * Safe
Streets: Violent Crime dropped to its
lowest level since 2003. Gang crime in
2009 was 2/3 of its 2006 high. Santa Monica's
sustainability efforts were among the first of their kind in the nation and
have served as a model for a growing number of cities, academic institutions
and businesses. Thanks to the city's
leadership, the adoption of aggressive goals for sustainability and the careful
tracking of progress are now widely practiced throughout the country. "We're using the Report Card and
Progress Report to guide our decision making," said Shannon Parry, Santa Monica's
Sustainable City Program coordinator. "The successes highlighted in the Report Card show that Santa Monica is actively
addressing the challenges to becoming a sustainable city. Each year we are
planting the seeds of change that will ripen into a more sustainable community
for current and future generations." Dean Kubani, the director of the city's Office of
Sustainability and the Environment, said, "The Report Card shows that we
are making progress toward becoming a sustainable city. It also identifies the
challenges that we face in truly realizing our vision for a sustainable
community. If we are to meet the aggressive goals set forth in the Sustainable
City Plan, all members of the community need to be educated, involved and committed
to our collective success." The
events slated for the coming days are intended to inform and involve the Santa Monica community in
all things sustainable. Visit www.sustainablesm.org, key word sustainability, for
additional information.

5th Annual Pico Festival
| |
Event To Feature An
Artwalk, Classic Car Show, Sidewalk Sale,
Live Music, Great Food and Will
Benefit Project Lemon-Aid & Cody Williams Fund When: Saturday, October 16, 2010 Time: 11am-4pm Location: Pico Blvd. from Main to Centinela, Santa Monica
Art is in
the air and everywhere at the 5th
Annual Pico Festival, presented by thePico Improvement Organization and the City of Santa Monica. Visitors to the Pico
Festival will enjoy viewing original artwork in all mediums at the Virginia
Avenue Park Art Pavilions (2200 Virginia Ave) where Pico art galleries,
studios, and dozens of local artists will display their work. Children can participate in live art events
at the Children's Activities Pavilion, either watching work being produced or
making their own creations. Live musical acts, such as local Latin ska band Upground, will perform on the Pico
Festival stage, and Pico stores will showcase their wares. Food vendors will
offer delicious cuisine of all kinds and the Pico Improvement Organization will
have 1,000 free food giveaways starting at 1pm. One key booth to visit at
Virginia Ave Park is the Project
Lemon-Aid lemonade stand. The Pico Improvement Organization (PIO) has
joined forces with the grassroots organization to raise funds for the Santa
Monica-Malibu Education Foundation fund, "For The Arts," an endowment that
provides arts education (including music, visual arts, dance and drama) for
students in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. Donations can be
made directly at the booth, or festival-goers can participate in a special
raffle and art auction. A portion of art sales at the Art Park and the Sidewalk
Sale will also go to the Fund. Just down the street, at Santa Monica College (1900 Pico), art
students will provide live demos and offer art for sale at the Art
Complex. There, visitors can watch as
art is created live in exciting glass-blowing, ceramics and painting
demonstrations. From the college, festival-goers can hop a Starline Tours
double-decker bus that will operate the length of Pico in Santa Monica, with
guides directing passengers to events taking place along the Boulevard (free
festival parking is available at Pico and 16th). Visitors can check out "Art Work on the Blvd," a street-long
art show that features the work of 15 highly talented local artists at a
variety of venues along Pico. Curated by local artist Bracha Kronovet and
architectural designer Gino Paino, the show is staged at such restaurants,
galleries and stores as Bite Bar, Upper West, ACA Pillow and Blue Seven
Gallery. Art lovers can view exciting
new works at these venues, including the exotic landscape photography of Andrew
Hanson and Gavin Lauchenauer, mixed medium works of Cynthia Rogers and David
Lehrer, and paintings by Joyce Patenaude and Marcello Pozzi. A full list of artists and venues can be
found at www.picopassport.com
and a map will be distributed at the event. The Pico Festival is also
joining forces with The Big Draw LA (www.thebigdraw.org), an
organization that creates opportunities for people of all ages to
discover that drawing can help everyone to "see, think and invent." Kids and grownups alike can tap into their inner
artist by stopping along the way to create sidewalk art at
Unurban Coffeehouse (3211 Pico), craft a magical garden on the 3100 block of
Pico, or sketch one of the vintage cars at the Pico Festival Classic Car Show.
All activities are free! Two "must-visit"
destinations include the Classic Car
Show, which includes 50 custom classic cars at the SGI parking lot at 26th
and Pico. A dj and a mariachi band will provide music, and booths will showcase
area auto businesses. Trophies and
prizes will be awarded in various classes and a special fundraiser will be held
for Samohi linebacker Cody Williams who is recovering from a severe injury
sustained in a football game last year. And at the Centinela end
of Pico, a large Sidewalk Sale will
tempt fashionistas and bargain hunters. Participating stores will have racks and tables with exciting
merchandise on the sidewalk and some merchants will have their entire store on
sale. Great deals can be found on men's, women's & children's apparel,
shoes, jewelry, and much more. One added attraction tied
to the Festival is La Foto's (806 Pico)
annual photography contest. Established and/or aspiring photographers are
encouraged to create images of Pico (taken anywhere from the ocean to
Centinela) that showcase the street, its merchants, the community or any aspect
of life on the street. Entries are due
by October 8th and should be submitted to www.lafoto-usa.com. Cash
prizes will be awarded in six categories and the winners will be notified
before the Festival takes place. For more information about
the Pico Festival, visit www.picopassport.com or Pico Boulevard on Facebook. The Pico Improvement
Organization is a Business Improvement District encompassing the entire length
of Pico Boulevard in Santa Monica. The
district contains a growing number of attractions and businesses from Santa
Monica College's performing arts venues and planetarium to one-of-a-kind
clothing boutiques, art galleries, coffee shops, designer furniture and more. A
zone of small clubs and cafés are found along the eastern boulevard while
Shutters on the Beach and Casa del Mar hotels mark Pico's western terminus.

SMMUSD Solar Victory! | |
On September 1, 2010 the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified
School District Board approved entering into a contract that will result in
solar panels on nine of its elementary school campuses, providing nearly
two-thirds of the power the schools need and saving the district as much as $4
million over the next 25 years. "The Board's decision represents a successful
culmination of a nearly two-year effort," said Virginia Hyatt, Purchasing
Director for the District. "We couldn't have arrived at this point without
the support and active participation of a team of dedicated solar
advocates." The City of Santa
Monica jump-started the effort in 2008 with a $20,000
grant for a solar potential study and development of a Request for
Proposals. The team assembled to select
a solar provider included City staff from the Solar Santa Monica program,
SMMUSD staff as represented by Hyatt, and the District's special "Measure
BB committee," comprised of architects, construction managers, and
Board-appointed community representatives. After a fizzled start, Solar Santa Monica brought the
partners back to the table with new numbers and ultimately, the PPA was worked
out with Preferred Contractor PermaCity and investment group ReGeneration
Finance. "We are proud to
have helped facilitate such an important development for our students and for
our community," said Munves. "It tested our mettle and our patience, and in the end we
triumphed." A more detailed description of the SSMUSD PPA process is
available on the Solar Santa Monica website, solarsantamonica.com.

Santa Monica Convention & Visitors Bureau Green Update
| |
To demonstrate their strength in eco-friendly meetings and corporate
social responsibility programs, Santa Monica Convention & Visitors Bureau
(SMCVB) took an innovative approach to exhibiting at this year's Meeting
Professionals International (MPI), World Education Congress 2010 (WEC)
conference in Vancouver
on July 24-27, 2010. Santa Monica CVB and our six partners (Fairmont
Miramar Hotel & Bungalows, Viceroy, Huntley, Loews, Pacific Park and Le
Merigot, A JW Marriott Hotel & Spa) made a statement by opting not to ship
the traditional tradeshow booth and donating the money saved to those in need.
In doing so, SMCVB was able to reduce carbon emissions as well as invest the
money saved towards providing shoes to local children in need through a
partnership with TOMS Shoes and the Virginia Avenue Project, a Santa Monica-based
non-profit geared towards mentoring at risk youth. Click here to learn more about SMCVB.
