Garden Tour: Lawn Alternatives

The City of Santa Monica is
happy to announce the first annual "Lawn Alternatives Tour" for home owners.
The tour will highlight beautiful water-efficient alternatives to traditional turf varieties found
throughout various homes in Santa Monica. These alternatives can range
from dense turf, to luscious meadows, to sprawling groundcovers. Some
even help
with erosion control. The
tour is designed to give you a better sense of the various plant materials and
their appropriate uses. In addition, the home-owners have agreed to be present
at each location to give us their valuable feedback as well. "Outdoor
water consumption can
be reduced up to 80% simply by choosing a suitable lawn alternative."
When: Saturday, August 21th,
10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Main Library - Bus Tour (pick-up and drop-off location)

Highlights: - Tour highlights the
various beautiful, climate appropriate lawn alternatives to the common lawn.
- These alternatives require less
mowing, which contributes to quieter neighborhoods, cleaner air, and less green waste.
- These alternatives require less
chemicals like pesticides and fertilizers, which means your backyard is a
safer, healthier environment for your children to play on. You'll also be
reducing the number of pollutants that enter our watershed and ocean.
- Once established, these
alternatives, require lower maintenance, which means more time to enjoy your
garden and less money spent on maintenance costs.
