Next is the Spring Jewelry Technician Intensive, from May 7 to June 29, 2012. This is a chance to work one-on-one with Alan Revere, who personally teaches the program.
The Summer/Fall 2012 brochures are in the mail, and you should receive your copy soon. Let us know if you want to be on our mailing list.
Revere is offering an exiting variety of new elective classes next semester, including Flush Setting, iPhone Photography, a one-day Jewelry Making Introduction, and our Green Jewelry class as a webinar. Check our web site for the schedule and descriptions.

Bench Tip from Alan Revere
Bead It: A Quick Trick for Polishing Beading Tools
|
If you do any pavé or bright-cut setting, you probably take very good care of your beading tools. These little concave punches that shape and polish setting beads come in sets of about 15 sizes. They can be mounted into a handle and pressed onto metal that has been raised with a graver to hold a stone. The problem with beading tools, as with most tools, is that they come from the factory in a semi-manufactured condition. The tool steel is fine, but the finish is lacking. In order for beading tools to leave smoothly shaped, shiny beads, they need to be polished. Here's how: Start by placing a piece of 4/0 polishing paper onto a hard, flat wood surface. Mount a beading tool into a flex-shaft. With the motor spinning, hold the tool perpendicular to the polishing paper and press down. As the tool spins and is pressed into the paper, it becomes polished. After one or two presses, the tool should leave a perfectly shaped and perfectly polished little "bead" in the polishing paper. It is now ready for use.
This series of tips is from Alan Revere's continuing column in
MJSA Journal, and will be collected into a book. Find more tips like this one in Mr. Revere's book, 101 Bench Tips, published by MJSA. Illustration is by Sean Kane.
