PJM

When Alan Revere published Professional Goldsmithing in 1991, he brought traditional European jewelry training to the US for the first time. Professional Goldsmithing was a best seller and quickly became a standard text in the field. To mark the 20th anniversary of this ground-breaking work, Alan Revere and Brynmorgen Press have teamed up to offer this new expanded edition that includes five new projects, over 130 new photos, and a handsome new layout. Thirty-five projects lead students and jewelers at all levels through a wide range of skills, from basic layout to advanced fabrication techniques. Revere's four decades as a passionate teacher are evident on every page as he leads us methodically through each step. What hasn't changed is the precise instruction that makes this edition a fitting testament to its predecessor and an invaluable resource for jewelers of the future.

"Every sentence confirms Revere's stature as an experienced master of goldsmithing."

- Prof. Dr. Erhard Brepohl, author of Theory and Practice of Goldsmithing

"A must read for anyone making jewelry."

- Jurgen J. Maerz

Revere Students at Designers by the Bay

Designer's by the Bay, hosted by the Women's Jewelry Association, is the region's premier fine jewelry event, held at Shreve and Company, showcasing the latest fine jewelry collections of Bay Area designers.

This year's event was held September 27, 2011. For the first time, the Revere Academy hosted a booth, which featured the work of Revere graduates, Deana Fukatusu, Jenny Reeves, Sam Woehrmann, Elizabeth Lass and Derek Duncan. The Revere display exemplified the quality, craftsmanship and professionalism for which our Academy is known. We received a lot of positive feedback, students made new contacts, and we look forward to participating again next year.

Revere graduates and students, Michelle Flynn and Laurie Chapman, Sarah Greenberg, Kimarie Burnette and Clare Ullman each had their own booth at the event. Congratulations to all!

Bench Tip from Alan Revere
Grid Locked: Turn Your Bench Pin into a Precision Layout Tool
Grid Locked
Graph paper isn't just for plotting mathematical data. It's a tool you can use to turn your bench pin-if it's mounted on a GRS Bench Mate that allows it to be removed and flipped over-into a precision layout tool, making it even more functional.

Find some graph paper and cut out a rectangle that will fit onto the underside of your bench pin. Laminate the graph paper in plastic for durability. Center it on the underside of your bench pin and glue it in place.

Anytime you need to lay out a piece of jewelry to find the right spot for drilling, sawing, or other precision work, just place it on the grid. Center the piece and use the grid to help lay out and check your work.

This series of tips is from Alan Revere's continuing column in MJSA Journal, and will be collected into a book. Find more tips like this one in Mr. Revere's book, 101 Bench Tips, published by MJSA. Illustration is by Sean Kane. Order now!

More Bench Tips

Visit our new and improved Bench Tips page with clever, time-saving techniques taken from the book, 101 Bench Tips for Jewelers by Alan Revere. Also included are 102+ bench tips that have been recently published in his column in "MJSA Journal," and Green Jewelry Tips from Christine Dhein. New entries will be added each month, so be sure to check back often.
