The Revere Academy awarded its Jewelry Technician Diploma to 20 s
tudents who graduated from the recent JT Intensive program.  The two-month Jewelry Technician Intensive Program, led by Alan Revere, is the most effective way to build the skills and confidence to succeed with a career in jewelry. The program includes instruction in fabrication, stone setting, casting, polishing, repair, trade practices, and hand engraving. Students in the program also meet designers, bench jewelers and manufacturers who offer advice based on their own experiences.

Each semester the JT Intensive concludes with a juried competition. Students work on an independent design project for Revere's classic Box Ring, from his book, Professional Goldsmithing. The assignment combines students' creative talents along with the technical skills they learned in the JT Intensive. Students and faculty voted to select winners in a number of categories. All the work was painstaking made and displayed excellent technical mastery.

The following award-winning students received gift certificates donated by jewelry tool supplier Otto Frei: Best Stone Setting: Chris Root, Technical Excellence: Juliana Greenaway Duncan, Best Design: Skye Schulte, Most Dramatic: Ben Faryna, Most Marketable: Jennifer Still, Best Engraving: Ravipa 'Par' Veerasaksri, Most Fun: Toni Voge, Most Outside the Box: Evan Hauser, and Facebook Favorite: Amanda McLaws.

The next JT Intensive program will be offered October 10 through December 6, 2011. Register now!

Revere Announces
New Scholarship for Beaders

Leslie Strong Necklace

Beaded Necklace with Handmade Silver Clasp by Leslie Strong

The Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts is offering a new scholarship aimed at the beading community. Anyone who makes beaded jewelry and would like to learn more about traditional jewelry making can apply to win this complete scholarship for any of the Academy's 3-day classes. The winner will choose from dozens of classes offered each year in a wide range of subjects such as fabrication, stone setting, jewelry design, and more.

The scholarship winner can select the class of their choice and receive full tuition plus airfare from anywhere in the U.S. as well as lodging in San Francisco, and kit fees. Applications ask for examples of your beaded jewelry along with a statement of why you want to attend the Revere Academy.

"This is a great opportunity for anyone who is passionate about making jewelry and would like to take their skills to the next level," says the school's director and founder, Alan Revere. "In just 3 days, the winner will learn an incredible amount from professionals who are eager to share their skills."

Leslie Strong, a beaded jewelry maker from Bellingham, WA summarized her experience at Revere by saying, "I started out working with beads but soon felt limited by what I could find in catalogs. As a designer, I wanted each element to be of high quality and fit my design. I needed to know at least the basics of fabrication. After a few Revere classes, I learned so much that the possibilities of what I can create are wider than ever before. And the jewelry I make is of greater value too."

The application deadline is October 15, 2011 and the winner will be announced November 1, 2011. There is no fee to complete the online application. More details.

Anyone who has ever soldered jewelry, has a searing memory of sacrificing a flux brush in the name of expedient soldering. This occurs when, in the middle of an extended soldering operation, you observe that although the metal is hot enough, the flux is not sufficient for the solder to flow. Perhaps there was never enough or it burned off during extended heating (which should be avoided). So you put your flux-wet brush on the hot metal to add more of the vital liquid, which of course sears and ruins a few bristles on the brush. That's okay if your family owns a flux brush business or if you use the cheap kind. But I use a #00 Red Sable (artist's type) as a flux brush, and I want them to last.

So try this the next time you need to re-apply flux to a hot piece of metal. Use the sharpened end of the brush to transport it. After removing the paint, which would burn upon contact with hot metal, dip the bare wood into flux to saturate it and transport it to the needed joint. The flux splatters of course, but it winds up in the right place without loosing a hair on your favorite brush.

MJSA Journal, and will be collected into a book. Find more tips like this one in Mr. Revere's book, 101 Bench Tips, published by MJSA . Illustration is by Sean Kane.
