18k Granulation with Kent Raible, April 11-15 2011 | |

18k Granulation with Kent Raible, April 11-15, 2011
Are you inspired by the amazingly intricate and opulent gold work of antiquity? This class will teach you techniques that have been in use for thousands of years, to make this type of work using relatively simple tools.
Granulation is the ancient technique of surface embellishment using tiny spherical granules of gold. Don't miss this rare opportunity to learn from Kent Raible, who has worked with and studied historical precious metalworking techniques for the past 30 years, and is now one of today's modern masters of granulation. Through lectures, demonstrations, and lots of time at the bench, you will experience the step-by-step procedures for this technique. The class will include making a special alloy of 18k gold for granulation, and how to produce, apply, and fuse granules, and finish the work. Students design and create one or more pieces to take home. Students will need to bring at least one half ounce of fine gold. Prerequisite: Fabrication 3 or experience.

Bench Tip from Alan Revere
A Bright Idea: Removing Acid Residue From Hollow Jewelry Pieces |
If you've ever worked on a hollow piece of jewelry, you know that if liquid-especially dilute acid-gets trapped inside, it can cause problems later. After soldering a post onto an earring, a jeweler usually puts the piece into a dilute acid solution or "pickle" to dissolve the flux and remove oxidation. Rinsing removes all of the acid easily. But when acid gets trapped inside a hollow form, even if it dries, it will continue to affect the metal, slowly leaking out of the hole and potentially irritating the wearer.
Here's the bright idea to prevent this problem: Shake as much of the pickle solution as possible out of the hollow area and then place the piece on a light bulb. The heat will warm the solution and it will evaporate within minutes.
Once dry, put the piece under warm water and fill up the cavity again, thus diluting any residual acid. Shake out the liquid and dry it on the light bulb. Repeating this process two or three times will ensure that no acid residue remains.
So slow down, check your work right from the start and all along the way, and remember: What is most important is that every piece you make represents your very best effort.
