JTI Grads Learn Skills & Earn Awards 27 Graduates, 9 Award-Winning Box Rings!
|
| Laura Brooks: Best Stone Setting |
The Revere Academy awarded its Jewelry Technician Diploma to 27 students who graduated from the recent JT Intensive program. The two-month Jewelry Technician Intensive Program, led by Alan Revere, is the most effective way to build the skills and confidence to succeed with a career in jewelry. The program includes instruction in fabrication, stone setting, casting, polishing, repair, trade practices, platinum and hand engraving. Students in the program also meet designers, bench jewelers and manufacturers who offer advice based on their own experiences.
Each semester the JT Intensive concludes with a juried competition. Students work on an independent design project for Revere's classic Box Ring, from his book, Professional Goldsmithing. The assignment combines students' creative talents along with the technical skills they learned in the JTI.

Andrea Williams, of Cohasset, MA is the 2011 Mort Ablelson Scholarship winner. She was also recently selected to show at the Smithsonian Show and she will be a Revere student during the 2011 Masters Symposium next spring. Talente is an international competition for young craftsmen and women in design and technology. This special show reflects the ideas of young people in the context of an experimental approach to materials and craft techniques. Approximately 95 international will be entries are exhibited in 2011.Revere student, Carl F Brown, recently opened The GoldSpot Jewelers in Alameda, CA. He was interviewed on December 15, 2010, by Eye On the Bay, during the ribbon cutting ceremony, for which the and the Mayor and other city council members were in attendance. Bench Tip from Alan Revere On Your Mark: The Fastest Shortcut of All
|
An apprentice once asked a wise old master goldsmith, "What is the fastest shortcut you know?" The grey-bearded master craftsman thought for a while, contemplating the hundreds of techniques and thousands tricks he had learned. He thought and he thought, and then his eyes lit up as he settled on the ultimate way to save time at work. Slowly, almost haltingly, he responded: "The fastest way to do anything is to do it right the first time."
Jewelry work requires great patience, in addition to an unyielding commitment to precision. Think of precision and patience as your partners, helping you to stay focused on achieving your goal of excellence, no matter how long it takes. Building jewelry should not be a race against time, but a journey toward quality: In the long run, your work will be judged not by how fast you completed it, but by how well you completed it. And this requires a dedication to doing your best at every step, so that you do not have to waste time reworking or undoing needless mistakes.
So slow down, check your work right from the start and all along the way, and remember: What is most important is that every piece you make represents your very best effort.
