Open to All Levels
April 12-16, 2010 - $999 + $25 kit fee
15% discount to all past Revere Design students, members of SNAG, MAG and JAC.

Join Alan Revere and friends and expand your skills and understanding of jewelry design. Artisans at all levels, from absolute beginner to serious seasoned professionals will get a great deal out of this special workshop. All of the basics of design are included as well as ways to stimulate and direct your creativity. We will draw as well as work with models to investigate design as applied to jewelry.

This class is specifically of interest to all past students, especially anyone who has taken Alan's 2-day design class and anyone who is making jewelry, whether they are a hobbyist or a professional. Because the truth is, more than ever, it is design that sells. There is so much mediocre and indistinguishable jewelry that good design stands out. Everyone's design can be improved. Making good designs is like working out. The more you do it, the better you get and practice is essential. And having a professional trainer/teacher is invaluable for rapid insight and progress.

We will have the right environment for creative, interesting, challenging projects, and professional guests who will demonstrate how they approach design. All of this is presented in a systematic approach to design that will turn on your creativity. Participants are guaranteed to create over a hundred original ideas, each of which can lead toward finished jewelry designs.

This is a great opportunity for someone to go on retreat, focus on design and go inside searching for originality while integrating feedback in a professional nurturing environment.

Tuition is $999 + $25 kit fee for 5 days. We are offering a special discount of 15% to all past Revere Design students, members of SNAG, MAG and JAC.

Payment in full is required to reserve space in classes. Register online or, by calling 415-391-4179.

Bench Tip on Coarse

Essential bench tools, sanding sticks are used for finishing metal surfaces throughout the jewelry making process. Although some suppliers offer them, most bench jewelers make their own. Sanding sticks are used progressively from coarse to fine in preparation for buffing and polishing metal, and they are virtually indispensable for jewelry work.

To make one, take a paint mixing stick from your local paint or hardware store and place it on the back of a piece of abrasive paper. Line up the edges and then use a scribe to score a crease in the paper. Carefully roll the stick a quarter turn and make the second crease, third, and fourth. Wrap the paper tightly around the stick and continue to score and roll the paper until it is wrapped completely and tightly around the stick. Use a stapler to affix the paper at multiple points on the overlapping edge and rip off the excess. For easy identification, mark two, four, or six dots on the edge of the stick to indicate the grit: 220, 400, or 600, respectively. You now have a renewable sanding stick ready to jump into action for precision finishing.

This series of tips is from Alan Revere's continuing column in MJSA Journal, and will be collected into a book. Find more tips like this one in Mr. Revere's first bench tips book, 101 Bench Tips, published by MJSA. Illustration is by Sean Kane. Order now!
