Yurman Design Class a Huge Success!
|

Jewelry designer David Yurman taught a short, intense class called The Complete Designer at San Francisco's Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts on April 27-29, 2009. Mr. Yurman, who is widely recognized as one of the most successful American jewelry designers, shared his insights, skill and experience with a group of students, for the first time.
The three-day workshop was limited to 30 students, with over twice as many on the wait list. Those who were lucky enough to reserve a seat experienced a unique opportunity to work with Mr. Yurman, whose creativity has led him to the forefront of international fashion. Through lectures, music, video and image presentations, Mr. Yurman guided students in developing their own signature styles. He led the class through his design process in taking a seed idea and developing it through production, manufacturing, and marketplace.
The pace of the class was rigorous. Students were given homework each night, including an assignment to create a detailed marketing plan. Mr. Yurman awarded five outstanding students with an Award of Merit for their work. Seven others received an Honorable Mention.
The class culminated with a collaborative competition among the students, who were given just a few hours to design a collection, develop a marketing plan and present it to Mr. Yurman and the rest of the class. The energy of the class was incredible and students left feeling inspired and empowered to put what they had learned into practice in their own businesses.
Be sure to check future issues of RevereNews for the 2010 Masters Symposium line-up. Registration begins October 1, 2009. |
Introducing Adorn America At Metal Clay World Conference In Bloomingdale, IL on July 16, 2009.
|
Alan Revere's Keyote Address about Giving Alan
Revere taught a pre-conference workshop on jewelry design July 15th and
gave the keynote address to about 150 attendees of this biannual
conference.
With his keynote, Mr. Revere introduced a giving movement called Adorn America.
The movement encourages jewelry makers to give some of their work to
others in the spirit of generosity. The theme is Making - Giving -
Wearing. Alan presented a captivating personal story about giving away
his work, integrated with images and inspirational words to encourage
his audience and others to re-evaluate their motivation and focus a
little less on selling and a little more on giving.
To
demonstrate that he practices what he preaches, Revere ended his
keynote by giving away a new silver bracelet that he made for the
event. Chosen totally randomly and much to her surprise, Alan picked
out Patricia Weikersheimer, a lucky audience member at the Metal Clay
World Conference. Alan demonstrated how to complete the full circle:
Alan made it and gave it away and now someone is wearing it and
appreciating his work. As Alan demonstrated in front of everyone, "When
you give away your work, you make two people happy and you raise the
happiness quotient for us all a little bit."
Revere's words
inspired conference attendees to give. According to Holly Gage, who was
in the audience, "He motivated me so much that I decided to give away
one of my pewter "When Peace Talks" pendants at one of the lunch
sessions. Michael Sturlin, who is also connected to the project,
reported that, "The crowd was overjoyed to hear Alan's message and the
recipient was ecstatic."

Bench Tips from Alan Revere On Your Mark: The Fastest Shortcut of All
|
An apprentice once asked a wise old master goldsmith, "What is the fastest shortcut you know?" The grey-bearded masters craftsman thought for a while, contemplating the hundreds of techniques and thousands tricks he had learned. He thought and he thought, and then his eyes lit up as he settled on the ultimate way to save time at work. Slowly, almost haltingly, he responded: "The fastest way to do anything is to do it right the first time." Jewelry work requires great patience, in addition to any unyielding commitment to precision. Think of precision and patience as your partners, helping you to stay focused on achieving your goal of excellence, no matter how long it takes. Building jewelry should not be a race against time, but a journey toward quality: In the long run, your work will be judged not by how fast you completed it, but by how well you completed it. And this requires a dedication to doing your best at every step, so that you do not have to waste time reworking or undoing needless mistakes. So slow down, check your work right from the start and all along the way, and remember: What is most important is that every piece you make represents your very best effort.
