Greetings!
Fall is here, and the days are getting shorter. Some of us tend to slow down, as we feel the change in season. This issue is filled with jewelry events, information, opportunites and advice to keep you inspired, motivated and making jewelry throughout the fall and winter. Remember that Sunday is Daylight Savings Time - don't forget to set your clock back one hour.

Happy hammering!

Tips for Staying Motivated in the Studio
We all love to make jewelry. But, when faced with the fact that we are working alone, day after day in the studio, sometimes your thoughts and mind wander. Here are some tips to keep you happily working:

1. Set a regular schedule: Developing good working habits, including a regular work schedule is an important part of staying motivated and productive in the studio. Daily practice is the best way to hone your skills. Pick the time of day that you feel your best and set aside that time to work in the studio. Do whatever it takes to be sure you keep your appointment; write it in your calendar, set an alarm, treat it like a regular job.

2. Get stimulated: Take a class. Learning a new technique can be a great way to get the creative juices flowing and inspire you to spend more time in the studio. A design class can enhance your creativity and provide new ways of thinking about creating.

3. Develop a support network: Whether it is a fellow jeweler, another artist, your spouse or a friend, find someone who will check up on you to be sure you are keeping your studio appointments. If you can find another jeweler, even better! Schedule time to discuss each other's work, give feedback and brainstorm solutions to problems. Your local metals guild is a great place to find like-minded jewelers.

4. Seek out inspiration: Look in books, online and in stores. Looking at what others are making can provide new ideas and insights. The new book, 500 Earrings, curated by Alan Revere is full of beautiful color photos to spark your imagination.

Binding Wire Tripod
Binding Wire Tripod
When you heat a piece of metal, the heat is transferred by conduction, away from the heat source. During some heating and soldering operations, it is very important to distribute the heat evenly over the entire object. In such cases, "global heating" is required.

One way to heat an object evenly is to place it above a reflective soldering pad. This enables you to heat from above while also heating from below by bouncing the flame off of the pad upward. In this manner, the piece is heated from above and below for the most uniform distribution of heat.

Using binding wire, it is often very convenient to create a tripod which serves two purposes. It can often function as a holding device for the parts. And also by bending the ends of the wire into feet, the binding wire can support the work above the soldering pad.

The Revere Academy is a professional jewelry school where master craftsmen pass on their skills and knowledge to students at all levels. Beginners and hobbyists as well as experienced working bench jewelers come for dozens of short, intensive classes (just 3-days!) and diploma programs lasting 2-4 months. I hope you will be able to join us for a class soon!
