Newsletter

Greetings!
The response to our last newsletter was overwhelmingly positive! Thanks to feedback and suggestions, we have included more about past students and their work as well as information about opportunities in the jewelry field.

Are you a current or past student with a jewelry web site? Add a link to Revere on your site and email me your URL, and I will add your link to our new web site, to be launched in early 2008.

Still Space for the Final Revere East

RAE Trees
This is the last time we will offer Revere Academy East. Don't miss this very special opportunity to immerse yourself in jewelry for a full week! This program is especially appealing for those on the East Coast who can take our most popular classes close to home. Students and staff stay in cozy stone and wood dorms overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains as the fall leaves turn color. Classes cover the same materlal, using the same tools and equipment, and are taught by the same experienced instructors as our classes in San Francisco.

Session 1:                                Session 2:
· Fabrication 1                          · Fabrication 2
· Fabrication 3                          · Jewelry Design
· Exploring Mokume-Gane            · Catches, Clasps & Closures

Bench Tips from Alan Revere
Resurfacing a Charcoal Block
Block tip
Charcoal is the ideal soldering surface because it absorbs oxygen, which causes oxidation (tarnish) on metal. Charcoal is soft so you can pin supports into it, shape it and hold work for soldering and annealing. It is no surprise that after a short time the new flat surface of a charcoal deteriorates. While still functional for some tasks, the gouged out surface of a well-used charcoal block is no longer flat and will not permit you to pin things in place or set up assemblies on a flat surface.

Resurfacing your used charcoal block is as easy as walking down the street or leaning out your window. Brick, cinder block and concrete are perfect grinding surfaces for charcoal. Place the block on the abrasive and rub it in a circle. A small cloud of powdered charcoal emanates from the soft charcoal as the surface is lowered as a new flat layer is established. Although this thins the block, it extends its functional life when a flat surface is needed.
