USDA Ag Secretary Vilsack Praises ABA's Leadership on MyPlate
 | |
USDA Ag Sec. Vilsack
|
USDA Agricultural Secretary Tom Vilsack spoke to the ABA Board on June 9. At the top of ABA's lists was speculation in the commodity market and nutrition. There are issues on which ABA and USDA do not exactly see eye-to-eye, such as advertising to children and ethanol. ABA, however, was able to take the important first step in having a dialogue with Secretary Vilsack
Vilsack on MyPlate: "We at the USDA are dealing with an obesity issue. A third of our kids are obese or at risk of being obese. You all know that. That's why we were so pleased at your assistance, your promotion, and your support of the new food plate, MyPlate."
"If we don't get a handle on the obesity issue with children, over the next seven-eight years, we're going to see healthcare costs rise 20 percent."
Vilsack on Grains: "You need [grains] as part of a balanced diet."

American Bakers PAC Hosts Industry Roundtable for Senator John Boozman

"American Bakers PAC is proud to support our longtime friend and advocate, Senator John Boozman," said ABA President & CEO Robb MacKie. "With Senator Boozman's 100 percent ABA Key Vote rating; his leadership on pro-business and free market legislation, coupled with the baking industry's strong presence in Arkansas; this roundtable co-hosted by our friends at ConAgra was a terrific fit for American Bakers PAC," said MacKie.

ABA Honors Outgoing Board Member Chris Moloney

The ABA Board of Directors honored outgoing member Chris Moloney at last week's summer meeting. Chris recently retired as vice president of the Bakery Business Unit with Safeway's Manufacturing Division. An active member of ABA's Board since 2000, Chris grew to be a true friend and partner of the industry. While his voice will be missed on the ABA Board, ABA sends its best wishes for a great retirement!

This week the U.S. Senate voted against proceeding with consideration of an amendment offered by Sens. Tom Coburn (R-OK) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) that would have brought an end to the $0.45 per gallon Volumetric Ethanol Excise Tax Credit (VEETC) and the tariff on imported ethanol. ABA (as part of a broad coalition) responded to the vote, "While we are confident of eventual success, [the] vote ended up being about process rather than substance and prevented a positive outcome at this time...."

On June 13, ABA urged the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to exercise caution in relying on data provided from four new studies, which were not previously entered into the docket regarding hours of service (HOS) regulations. ABA noted that an independent peer review and critique undertaken by Dr. Ronald Kipling, former head of FMCSA's research division, raised fundamental criticisms about the methodology, analysis, principal findings and conclusions of the new reports. ABA re-emphasized that the current HOS regulations, properly enforced, have been effective and any changes must be based on only the most thorough and rigorous scientific research.
