ABA Leads Grain Chain Response to New Food Icon
Pyramid Question

The new food icon, designed to help consumers confused by the current My Pyramid icon, will be unveiled by USDA tomorrow at 10:30AM EDT on http://www.usda.gov/live. ABA is coordinating the joint response by a dozen groups representing the grain industry.  This includes a joint press meeting with members of its nutrition advisory committee to discuss the impact of the new icon on grain foods.

The ABA Board of Directors will have the privilege and pleasure of meeting with USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack during its June meeting, and the timing couldn't be any better. The lengthy list of issues we initially asked the secretary to address included commodity speculation, dietary guidelines, sodium, food safety, and wheat research. It seems that each week that we get closer to the meeting adds a new issue into the mix...

Food safety, nutrition labeling, dietary guidelines, and commodities are all front and center today. Sec. Vilsack is addressing the ABA Board on June 9. ABA will ask Sec. Vilsack your questions and print his responses on Wednesday, June 15.

Food industry executives and others representing the broader business community gathered at ABA on May 25 to exchange ideas with Rep. Noem (R-SD-1) on commodity market volatility, proposed regulations on food companies marketing to children, budget and labor issues and school meal standards proposals.
