Food Safety

On May 20, ABA submitted comments in response to FDA's public meeting held on April 20, regarding the preventative controls provisions of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). ABA focused on a single key issue, exemption from compliance for depot facilities, by allowing such facilities to satisfy requirements using existing Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs). Additionally, ABA noted that it will soon be filing a citizen petition with FDA asking the agency to promulgate regulations codifying such an exemption. [Read more]

child marketing proposal"The joint proposal, set forth by USDA, FDA, CDC and FTC, would preclude advertising of nearly all baked goods to children aged 2-17, including: nutritious, fiber rich whole wheat breads, whole grain cereals and enriched grain products that offer iron and four B vitamins including folic acid, such as bread, pasta and rice," testified ABA Senior Vice President Lee Sanders. The proposed nutrition principles outlined in the initiative differ significantly from the very recent, science-based Dietary Guidelines. ABA pointed to the successful Children's Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative as an alternative to the proposal.

ABA Continues to Tackle Volatile Wheat Market
Volatility

Today, ABA submitted a letter to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) signed by more than 48 bakers urging the commission to immediately move forward with defining index funds as speculators and ensuring that they operate in the wheat market under strict contract limits. "[Market volatility] continues to put bakers and other traditional market participants at risk," said ABA President and CEO Robb MacKie after last week's CFTC Agricultural Advisory Committee meeting.  "ABA firmly believes that taking these steps will help decrease volatility and allow the markets react appropriately to traditional supply and demand factors."

On May 20, ABA submitted a letter to the House Appropriations Committee with 16 other organizations opposing FDA user fees to implement the Food Safety Modernization Act. The committee has scheduled a mark-up of the FY 2012 agriculture appropriations budget for the subcommittee on May 24 and for the full committee vote on May 31.

ABA is taking the unprecedented step of asking all bakers to immediately contact the CFTC to implement rules enforcing contract limits on index funds. Please take a couple of minutes to visit ABA's RisetoAction.org grassroots Web site. The risk to your business is too great to not invest those couple of minutes.
