Wheat SummitOn Tuesday, ABA joined with NAWG, NAMA  and the U.S. Wheat Associates in sponsoring the 2011 Wheat Summit. The theme for this year's summit, Moving Forward Together, highlighted new engagement surrounding grower support for the eventual commercialization of biotech wheat traits and increased demand for plentiful, affordable and nutritious grains from an ever growing world population. ABA CAPC Chair Hayden Wands, director and purchaser of commodities, Earthgrains Baking Company, represented the bakers' perspective in a panel discussing the responsible rollout of biotech wheat. ABA Senior Vice President, Government Relations and Public Affairs Lee Sanders served as a summit moderator.

SugarUSDA Secretary Vilsack recently announced an increase sugar imports to make up for supply concerns in the U.S.  In March 2011, ABA urged the USDA to increase the stocks to use ratio to a sustainable 15.5 percent, which in the past resulted in adequate sugar supplies for consumers and food producers, including bakers.

USDA logoABA partnered with the International Food Additives Council (IFAC) submitting joint comments to USDA's National Organic Program (NOP) voicing opposition to an NOP recommendation to include an annotation requiring yeast to be organic if the intended end use is for human consumption. Organic yeasts are not readily available, and therefore, if accepted this proposal would greatly limit its use in organic and made with organic products.

APC"All baking companies need to understand how the government impacts their businesses and bottom lines," said ABA President & CEO Robb MacKie, keynote speaker at the American Pie Council's (APC) Pie Seminar last weekend. MacKie presented an economic overview of the industry and a "Washington Update" to approximately 30 pie manufacturers. While he presented some positive developments due to the new, "pro-business" Congress, he also emphasized the significant legislative and regulatory challenges that remain on the horizon for bakers.

Take ActionCorn-based ethanol has led to the decrease of wheat acreage in the U.S. over the 30 past years and tighter food supplies around the world.  Last December, Congress voted for a one-year extension of the ethanol tax credit, at a yearly cost of over $6 billion dollars.  But things have changed in Congress since December.  Senators Tom Coburn (R-OK) and Ben Cardin (D-MD) have sponsored a bill seeking to eliminate this tax credit and Senator Coburn is looking to attach this bill as an amendment to legislation currently being debated in the Senate.

Contact your Senators today urging them to support this amendment.  Every letter supporting the repeal of the ethanol tax credit brings us one step closer to eventually eliminating this detrimental program.
