Food Safety Modernization Act: 

What Does this Mean for Bakers?


When: Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2:00 pm EST / 1:00 pm CST/ Noon MST/ 11:00 am PST (60 minutes).  Participation is complimentary. 
 

Food Safety

The purpose of the joint call is to provide an overview on practical aspects of the new law and how it will specifically impact the baking industry. Experts from ABA, AIB and Covington & Burling will provide key policy, legal and technical/practical information on the new law. There will be opportunities to ask questions of the experts at the end of the call.

February FTRAC Agenda to Include Food Safety, Nutrition, Labeling Policy
FTRACABA's Food Technical Regulatory Affairs Committee (FTRAC) meeting, Feb. 8-9, will provide bakers and their suppliers with key information on a variety of critical industry issues, including food safety, nutrition and labeling. On Feb. 8, FTRAC and ABA's Commodities and Agricultural Policy Committee (CAPC) will join forces with the National Association of Wheat Growers for USDA and Congressional visits on nutritional policy as well as Agricultural Research Service wheat quality laboratory funding. The evening of Feb. 8 will feature a joint FTRAC and CAPC dinner. On Feb. 9, FTRAC will hear food safety presentations from FDA, AIB and ABA FDA Counsel Covington & Burling. The International Food Information Council will provide a presentation on their recent research results, "Environment and Consumer Perspectives about Processed Foods and Food Ingredients." Additionally, attendees will receive updates on a variety of nutrition initiatives.

CAPC Chairman Hayden Wands Addresses NAWG and U.S. Wheat Associates
On Jan. 17, ABA Commodities and Agricultural Committee (CAPC) Chairman Hayden Wands, director of procurement with Sara Lee Fresh Bakery, addressed the joint National Association of Wheat Growers and U.S. Wheat Associates meeting in Washington, D.C. Mr. Wands briefed the group on a variety of issues of mutual interest, including how to increase the production of white wheat in the U.S. and increasing funding for vital wheat research.

CAPC will be meeting alongside the ABA Food Technical Regulatory Affairs Committee Feb. 8-9, in Washington, D.C. to continue these discussions.

WASHINGTON D.C. - Yesterday, the CFTC took a significant step toward approving a longpending ABA recommendation to address the detrimental impact of index funds in commodity futures markets. "Due to the impact of index funds, bakers and wheat producers are facing everincreasing volatility in the wheat markets," said ABA President and CEO Robb MacKie. "CFTC's decision is a positive step toward decreasing volatility and recreating an environment for true price discovery."

Wheat prices are set to stay firm, but more than likely will increase in value. The world situation won't change appreciable until this summer, if it will then. The status quo looks to have wheat at high values heading into the next two crop years, before relief can be found in significant build up in wheat stocks to knock the legs out from under wheat values.
