ABA and other coalition members urged Congress to reject the recent proposals to extend corn-based ethanol subsidies. Last week, corn ethanol organizations proposed to extend existing corn ethanol subsidies, extend trade barriers, create new corn ethanol subsidies, increase the federal corn ethanol mandate from 15 to 21 billion gallons, and to ignore sound science. If enacted, this proposal would cost taxpayers $6 billion next year alone, divert more than half of the U.S. corn supply from food and feed to fuel, increase food prices, and eliminate critical environmental protections included in the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act.

Spotlight on ABA Members Who Give Back
Operation Blessing 2009 Participant
Operation Blessing
Each holiday season, ABA members generously donate products, time, and service to less fortunate Americans. ABA wants to share your uplifting stories of giving on ABA's forthcoming Web page: "The Baking Industry Gives Back."

Please send us stories and pictures of your company's altruistic activities; also include information on how others can get involved or learn more. Spread the joy of giving yet again this holiday season! All members (baker and supplier) are welcome to submit stories.

Please submit stories to Membership Services & Web Site Coordinator Margaret Collins at mcollins@americanbakers.org

The campaign encourages families to make one night a week "Sandwich Night" - a nutritious and delicious dinner-solution for the whole family.

Bobby & Jamie Deen (hosts of The Food Network's "Road Tasted" and sons of Paula Deen) will demonstrate their sandwich recipes - created just for the Sandwich Night Campaign - to a crowd expected to number in the thousands.
