FDA and USDA Maintain Authority on School Food Programs
This week, the Senate unanimously approved the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act, a $4.5 billion childhood nutrition reauthorization bill, that funds food programs in public schools. This legislation is part of the first lady's efforts to end childhood hunger and to combat obesity. "Through aggressive education efforts in the Senate, ABA was successful in having concerning efficacy language removed from the Senate-passed bill," said ABA Senior Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs Lee Sanders.
"ABA believes that FDA and USDA currently have ample authority to review and assess the benefits of food ingredients. Thus we were concerned that the language would add another layer of review by an unnecessary third party, which would discourage the development of innovative new products that provide all Americans, including WIC recipients, with healthy choices. In particular, ABA was concerned that the provision would not provide sufficient public input and transparency," Ms. Sanders concluded. Further action is expected in September to move the legislation
forward in the House. |

ABA Urges Congress to Eliminate New Form 1099 Reporting
Requirements
Businesses are already overburdened with tax paperwork and reporting
requirements. Unfortunately, the expanded information reporting
requirement included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will
only further increase the cost and complexity of complying with the tax code.
Specifically, beginning in 2012, the new healthcare law requires businesses to
send Form 1099s for every business-to-business transaction of $600 or more for
both property and services - creating a tremendous new paperwork compliance
burden for small businesses.

Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) Visits Burford Corporation Headquarters
"Burford Corporation was honored to host Rep. Tom Cole at our headquarters in Maysville," said Burford President Fred Springer. "Rep. Cole engaged our employees on topics such as possible immigration reform, impending cap and trade legislation and federal tax reform. He also addressed the growing 'anti-incumbent' sentiment that is spreading across the country and, as an incumbent himself, made a very good case for why he should be reelected this November," said Springer.
Rep. Cole represents the fourth district of Oklahoma and is a former Chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee. He currently serves on the powerful House Appropriations Committee. |
