"Not Your Grandfather's IBIE"
ABA President & CEO Robb MacKie
Robb MacKie
You may have noticed the countdown to IBIE 2010 widget on the ABA Web site. When the counter stood at 400, 300 and even 200 days, there wasn't the same sense of immediacy as there is now, now that the counter is below 60 days. Next month, the U.S. and global baking industry will unite in Las Vegas for what promises to be a spectacular show.

Much like professional sports where there is no off-season, the same can be said for IBIE. Shortly after the curtain closed on IBIE 2007, the planning began to make IBIE 2010 more relevant, more exciting and more important to the industry's future success. Since then, the IBIE Committee (led by Rich Hoskins, Colborne Corporation, and Mike Beaty, Flowers Foods), the ABA and BEMA staffs, IBIE's show management firm SmithBucklin and marketing firm MDG have done an outstanding job executing key elements of the enhanced IBIE 2010 show. New partnerships with the Retail Bakers of America and Tortilla Industry Association have also contributed to adding new and exciting aspects to the show.

As a result of ABA's Policy Conference visit with Senator Richard Burr (R-NC), Sen. Burr sent letters to both the Secretaries of USDA and HHS voicing concerns, urging transparency and calling for the use of sound science for the ongoing and future deliberations for the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. "Senator Burr very much appreciated his dialogue with ABA members on this critical issue. He has voiced these concerns on behalf of his constituents to both USDA and HHS. ABA's congressional outreach is making a difference and positively impacting the ongoing process," said ABA Senior Vice President, Government Relations & Public Affairs Lee Sanders.

Volatility Continues to Plague the Wheat Market
Volatility
The American Bakers Association again calls on the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to take immediate action in addressing volatility in the wheat markets. "The market has become dysfunctional," said Robb MacKie, ABA president and CEO. "Bakers and other true commercial users are finding it increasingly difficult to use the wheat futures markets for price discovery. Simply put, the markets just aren't working like they are supposed to."
