Jesus Calms The Storm

Sudden storms can appear in life with little warning. Although we have witnessed many miracles, we still panic in the storms of life. As humans, we experience real danger; but what we must realize is that Christ could control the forces of nature. There is often a stormy area of our human nature where we feel God can't or won't work. When we truly understand who God is, however, we will realize that Jesus controls both the storms of nature and the storms of the troubled heart. Jesus' power that calmed the storm can also help us deal with the problems we face. Jesus is willing to help if we only ask him. We should never discount his power even in terrible trials.

Winds blow often causing violent and unexpected storms. The disciples panicked because the storm threatened to destroy them all, and Jesus seemed unaware and unconcerned. Theirs was a physical storm, but storms come in other forms. Think about the storms in your life - the situations that cause you great anxiety. Whatever your difficulty, you have two options: You can worry and assume that Jesus no longer cares, or you can resist fear, putting your trust in him. When you feel like panicking, confess your need for God and then trust him to care for you.

The disciples lived with Jesus, but they underestimated him. They did not see that his power applied to their very own situation. Jesus has been with us for over 20 centuries, and yet we, like the disciples, underestimate his power to handle crises in our lives. The disciples did not yet know enough about Jesus. Jesus' disciples were not frightened without cause. Even though several of them were expert fishermen and knew how to handle a boat, their peril was real. When caught in the storms of life, it is easy to think that God has lost control and that we're at the mercy of the winds of fate. In reality, God is sovereign. He controls the history of the world as well as our personal destinies. Just as Jesus calmed the waves, he can calm whatever storms you may face.

Faith is the ability to not panic knowing that Jesus calms the storm. (Click on and read the following links Matt 8:23-27; Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25
