Two people interview for the same position. One already works for the organization in a different capacity; she is interested in moving up. The second has held an intern position and was invited to apply.
Candidate number one, feeling comfortable in her knowledge of the company, dresses casually for the interview. Chewing gum, she relaxes back in her chair as she competently answers the questions the interview panel puts before her.
Candidate number two appears for his interview professionally dressed in a suit and tie. Although nervous, his body language reflects his interest in the experience: he sits up straight in his chair, leaning slightly forward and maintaining eye contact as he answers the interview questions.
It should be no surprise that candidate number two is offered the position. Although his experience is not as extensive as the first candidate, his professionalism, interest and respect for the process make him stand out.

Question: If you are being chased by a bear, how fast do you need to run?
Answer: Faster than the slowest person!
Whether you are interviewing for a job, working towards a promotion or approaching a new client, keep in mind that you are not necessarily competing for something -- you might be competing against someone else.
How do you measure up?
