While browsing through a garden center recently, I spotted a woman who was dressed in an outfit of skirt, sweater, heels and simple jewelry. Although the description sounds ordinary, the impact she had was anything but; she was absolutely stunning. It was not that she was an exceptionally beautiful woman -- she was attractive, yes, -- but it was the combination of colors that she wore and the dignified way in which she carried herself that stood out.
By the admiring looks she was receiving, it was apparent that I was not the only one who had noticed her. As she passed by me, I complimented her on her shoes (a weakness of mine).
... And was extremely disappointed to find that the personality wasn't quite in keeping with the appearance. She coldly glanced my direction, looked me over from head to toe, and said "Oh. Hmmmm" before gliding away.
Ouch. I didn't know if I should curtsy or simply fade into the background. I definitely felt like I should have kept my opinion to myself.
People offer compliments to both men and women when they see something they like; it feels good to say something positive to another person. Let your response continue that feeling, not ruin it!

Remember...
When I was in sixth grade, a boy complimented me on a new haircut. In turn, I played the coy young girl and said "Oh, it's not that great..." or some such dumb thing.
His response? "Why can't girls ever just say thank you and then stop talking!"
It's the perfect way to handle a compliment ... just say thank you and offer a big smile in return!
