Autumn is in the air. You can feel it in the crisp breeze and the sun, while bright, doesn't have the warmth of mid-July. Kids have returned to school, summer-time toys are put away for the year and we again assume our routines.
As we transition to the season of "hearth and home", it's also a good time to refresh our knowledge of basic courtesies:
- The "magic words": Please, Thank You and You're Welcome. They never go out of style and they always make a difference.
- A smile is the number one indicator that conversation is welcome. Offer a sincere smile to those you meet, along with a friendly greeting; you never know who you may encounter!
- Hold the door for the person entering behind you, regardless of gender. Don't be surprised if that person holds the next door for you.
- Turn off your cell phone and stop texting when you are meeting with other people. The person you are face to face with takes precedence!
- Introduce yourself by both names and extend your hand when meeting others. A handshake is a physical connection between two people; make sure you offer a firm grasp and look people in the eye.
These are not difficult, complicated steps to master. It's about making the effort to make them a habit.

Remember...
Common courtesies -- the basics -- matter because they are a way to acknowledge and show respect for others.
