Tips, suggestions and stories...

Things to keep in mind as you interact with others

"Etiquette is not about being 'stuffy.'   It's about putting yourself forward in the best possible way, using courtesy to others as your guide, while still allowing your own personality to shine!"

Autumn is in the air. You can feel it in the crisp breeze and the sun, while bright, doesn't have the warmth of mid-July. Kids have returned to school, summer-time toys are put away for the year and we again assume our routines.

As we transition to the season of "hearth and home", it's also a good time to refresh our knowledge of basic courtesies:
  • The "magic words": Please, Thank You and You're Welcome. They never go out of style and they always make a difference.
  • A smile is the number one indicator that conversation is welcome. Offer a sincere smile to those you meet, along with a friendly greeting; you never know who you may encounter!
  • Hold the door for the person entering behind you, regardless of gender. Don't be surprised if that person holds the next door for you.
  • Turn off your cell phone and stop texting when you are meeting with other people. The person you are face to face with takes precedence!
  • Introduce yourself by both names and extend your hand when meeting others. A handshake is a physical connection between two people; make sure you offer a firm grasp and look people in the eye.
These are not difficult, complicated steps to master. It's about making the effort to make them a habit.

Remember...

Common courtesies -- the basics -- matter because they are a way to acknowledge and show respect for others.
