I had occasion to stop in at a jewelry store last week. Alas, I was not shopping; I was there for a ring "check-up" and cleaning. The young woman helping me was very pleasant and as she was taking care of business, I was taking a look around.
The glass cases used to display the jewelry were shiny, clean and polished, everything inside neatly arranged for viewing. The carpet was freshly vacuumed and the chairs carefully aligned should a patron choose to sit as they peruse their many options.
However, the wide open area behind the cases and the back counter was another story. There was a trash can overflowing with assorted forms of garbage, a bottle of glass cleaner casually hooked over the edge (so it wouldn't get lost?) The accompanying roll of paper towels was tossed on the floor a few feet away, in the process of unrolling itself. The back counter was piled high with what were obviously receipts and other forms of paperwork, empty food wrappers and miscellaneous "stuff".
Needless to say, their back did not match their front ... and they somehow forgot that it was visible to their customers.
Some people feel they thrive on working in a chaotic environment and that may do well for them, personally. But what about the message it sends to others?
- The appearance of your workplace suggests quality and productivity -- and it will have an effect on your attitude.
- Positive surroundings signal to others that you take pride in your work.
In addition, an aesthetic appearance of the workplace may:
- Provide an environment which is inspiring and stimulating.
- Contribute to a fun working atmosphere.
- Help to generate energy and enthusiasm.
What does your workspace say about you: "Welcome to my ... ?"

Remember...
Whenever someone walks into an office, shop, retail establishment, etc., a mental snapshot is taken and, consciously or unconsciously, the person starts to answer the question "what kind of work goes on here?" |
