One of the most important moments when you interact with another person comes at the end of your conversation ... the closing. How you conclude your discussion says a lot about your professionalism and consideration of others.
Be positive:
- "I've enjoyed our conversation ... It's been a pleasure meeting you ... I hope we have a chance to speak again soon"
- Be genuine; a lack of sincerity is usually obvious.
Summarize -- Review points of the discussion:
- "I appreciate you telling me more about the organization. ... Thank you for sharing the information about _________ with me"
- It is an indicator that the conversation is coming to a close.
Make your excuse:
- "I have an appointment I must head off to" ... "It is time for me to return to work"
If you plan to follow up with coffee or perhaps lunch, say so -- and then do so! You will build trust and credibility by following up on your word.
As you make your exit, you want to do so in such a manner that you do not appear abrupt or rude and you leave the other person feeling valued. A thoughtless act as you walk away could ruin the positive impression you just made!

Remember...
When in conversation with another person and you become aware that he is attempting to close the conversation, score brownie points for yourself by noticing and gracefully letting him go.
Every time you interact with someone, you have the opportunity to build your reputation or diminish it.
