Tips, suggestions and stories...

Things to keep in mind as you interact with others

"Etiquette is not about being 'stuffy.'   It's about putting yourself forward in the best possible way, using courtesy to others as your guide, while still allowing your own personality to shine!"

I would like to say upfront that I have thought of writing about this particular subject for quite a while now but have held off, as it is of a somewhat delicate nature and I do not wish to offend anyone.   However, as I encountered the offending behavior once again last week, enough's enough!

Cell phones are great for keeping us connected ... but there are limits.  Plain and simple, hang up the telephone when you are using the restroom, especially if it is a public facility!

I thought I had heard it all when a woman, upon answering her ringing cell phone in a crowded restroom at a movie theatre, responded to the obvious inquiry of "What are you doing?" replied "Oh, nothing much..."   (Yes, she was locked in a stall.)

However, this was topped last week, when I overheard a woman, again, safely tucked away in a bathroom stall, ask the person on the other end of the line "What's the matter, can't you talk right now?"   Huh?   A few minutes later, she emerged from the stall, still chatting, with her phone tucked between her ear and shoulder, juggling numerous packages and her handbag.  I have no idea how she did it.

I understand that this is not only an issue with women, but also with men too.   Some of the stories and descriptions have been, shall we say, interesting?

Use the facilities, complete your business, and then leave.   Give the cell phone a rest, if not out of courtesy to the person on the other end of the phone, then out of respect for the other people who are sharing the space.

Remember...

It is predicted that one billion mobile phones will be sold worldwide in the year 2009.

A recent national poll showed that about 72% of Americans agree that users' worst cell phone habit is having loud conversations in public, while almost 7 out of 10 people said they observe poor cell phone etiquette at least once every day.

Keep cell phone use out of the restroom!
