Tips, suggestions and stories...

Things to keep in mind as you interact with others

"Etiquette is not about being 'stuffy.'   It's about putting yourself forward in the best possible way, using courtesy to others as your guide, while still allowing your own personality to shine!"

Let's see a show of hands -- who is feeling the effects of some stress as you go about your daily life?   It doesn't have to be because of work issues; it can be family/relationship oriented, due to financial concerns, personal matters, all of the above, none of the above ... the list can be endless and sometimes overwhelming.

A positive interaction with another person can help to reduce your stress, be it a five minute chat with the clerk ringing up your groceries, coffee with a new contact or lunch with an old friend.   It is an opportunity to make a connection with someone else and share a smile, a friendly conversation, perhaps a laugh, that can help to make the time move along and the day seem brighter.

But what about the effect you may have on the other person?  That smile, exchange of pleasantries in the waiting room of a doctor's office or at the post office, the kind word or compliment you offer in passing can light up the recipient's afternoon.   The effects are unknown to you; your comments could be the nicest thing -- perhaps the only positive thing -- that has happened to that person that day.

Remember...

Do you call someone -- perhaps email him or her -- only when you need something?  Reach out and just say hi,  hope you are well, have a good afternoon, let's get together for coffee (and set a date!) good luck on your project (or how did it go).   It's about connecting with others ...

Make an effort.  Even if you don't need it (and you might surprise yourself) the other person might.  It's part of following up -- and maintaining -- that positive impression.
