Message from the Chair
As I write this, the Section's Annual Dinner Meeting is about to occur. But I should backtrack a bit. The Section did pass its budget for 2009 in December. If you're interested, you can view the budget by following this link.
If you've examined our budget in past years, it was admittedly hard-to-follow. In an effort to make things more understandable this year, we are using "net" amounts. So when we have a dinner, for example, the net is the final cost to the Section after "income" has been deducted from "expenses". Most dinners should be at a very low cost to the Section, including only speaker expenses and miscellaneous costs.
We can also report, our final budget expenses for 2008, as well as the assets of the Section. An additional budget category is our custodial accounts. When the Section obtains a grant for a specific purpose (e.g. Chemistry and the Arts Lecture Series), that money must be spent for the purpose of the grant. Those funds don't drop to zero at the end of a budget year - the Section is merely managing the funds until such time as they are spent.
Committees: You will find the list of the elected Executive Committee for 2009 on our Section's website. The Section also has several committees and committee chairs to handle various functions and activities. If you look at that document, you may notice some vacancies - this is where we could use your help. We'd actually like even more help than that. Each committee could use a "Vice-Chair", this would spread the work more and develop skills. So if you have an interest area, please contact me and we can discuss it.
We plan to restart our popular Networking Mixers again on Tuesday, March 3rd. We'll call them First Tuesdays because our plan is to have them starting at 5 PM on the first Tuesday of each month. The location is the same: MacGregor's Tap & Grill at 300 Jefferson Rd. Purchase your own beverage and whatever food you might like and get to know some other members of the Rochester Section.
Monday evening, April 13, the Rochester Section will host an ACS Tour Speaker, Dr. Donald Burns who will speak on "Counterfeiting: Catch'em with Near IR". We are still working on details, but mark the date! Ken Schlecht 2009 Rochester ACS Chair

2009 Harrison Howe Award
The Rochester Section of the American Chemical Society is proud to announce the selection of Professor Carolyn R. Bertozzi, the T. Z. and Irmgard Chu Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, as the 2009 recipient of the Harrison Howe Award.
Carolyn Bertozzi is recognized as one of the leading scientists of her generation. Her research interests lie at the intersection of chemistry and biology, with a focus on understanding the relationship of cell surface glycosylation to normal cell function and to human disease. Bertozzi has designed elegant experiments that have made historic contributions to the way in which researchers can profile changes in cell surface glycosylation associated with cancer, inflammation, and bacterial infection. She is most noted for her work in pioneering the field of bioorthogonal chemistry on living systems.
The award will be presented at a public lecture at the University of Rochester Medical School on October 1, 2009 at 7:30 pm in the Class of '62 Auditorium, with a reception to follow. Bertozzi will also present a technical lecture to local students and chemists at 2:00 pm in the Class of '62 Auditorium at University of Rochester on October 1, 2009.
The Harrison Howe Award is dedicated to the memory of Harrison E. Howe, 1881-1942, a cofounder of the ACS Rochester Section and a well-known chemist, editor, and author. The award was established to recognize a scientist who has made outstanding contributions to chemistry or closely related fields and who shows great potential for further achievement. Recent winners of the award include Charles Lieber (2002), Jack Szostak (2003), Michael Marletta (2004), Laura Kiessling (2005), and Daniel Nocera (2008).
For more information about the 2009 Harrison Howe Award lectures and event please contact Patrick Holland, Associate Professor of Chemistry or Debra Haring, Development Administrator, at the University of Rochester at hhowe@chem.rochester.edu. |
Undergraduate Research Symposium - Hold the Date

Councilor's Corner Entering this new year of 2009, we are witnessing times the likes of which some of us have not seen. For others, it a time that brings back bad memories. The economic climate, here in Rochester and around the world, is being impacted with no end in sight for the foreseeable future.
We are seeing layoffs at our major industries locally, as well as within smaller companies. Academia is also looking for ways to cut costs during this time. State and local governments are also facing an economic crisis. I can report to you, as well, that the ACS is also tightening their belts and looking for a multitude of ways to shave costs. Some of this cost cutting is impacting staff in Washington. However, more than ever, there is an eagle eye on all costs within the society and around all of their programs.
As Chair of the Membership Affairs Committee, and as your Councilor, I am committed to insuring that we maintain the most important membership benefits. It is very easy, during times like this, for people to find something "better" to do with their money than send it on to the ACS for membership. Thus, we have an obligation to show our members that their ACS membership is valuable to them, even more so in times likes these. This would not be the time to cut back on benefits that members find most valuable to them.
So you can help me. I need to know from all of you what ACS benefits you find the most valuable. This will help me champion these benefits should calls come down for cuts. In the next month or so you will receive a brief survey asking you which ACS services you prize most highly. Please look for it and take a moment to fill it out.
Yes, these are trying times, but this is when the family network of chemical professionals becomes even more valuable. I am honored to serve you in my leadership positiion as Chair of the Membership Affairs Committee and I am committed to insure that each members gets the most out of their member dues.
Please remember that both I and Rich Hartmann, as Councilors, are your voices on the national level. Feel free to contact me via:
