Chemistry and the Arts Lecture Series

Peace through Chemistry (Lichtenstein)The Rochester Section of the American Chemical Society continues its 2008 series of lectures highlighting the role of chemistry in the arts.  These lectures feature experts who will explore this role of chemistry, from the dawn of civilization using completely empirical approaches to current times in which the most sophisticated methods of material science and analytical chemistry are applied to arts-related areas.

Each lecture will be followed by an informal reception.

A PDF Flier of the complete lecture series is available for downloading here.

Councilor's Corner

HOW IMPORTANT IS YOUR VOTE IN THE NATIONAL ACS ELECTIONS?

The whole of the membership of the American Chemical Society now has the opportunity to vote on the constitutional amendments brought about by the Petition on Membership Categories and Requirements that was approved by the ACS Council at the Spring, 2008 National Meeting.

The National ACS election ballots began going out in September 29th, as did the notification that you can vote electronically if you choose.

Many members do not get involved in the National ACS elections for a variety of reasons.  Maybe they feel they are too far removed from the national level.  Maybe they feel it does not matter.  Maybe they just want their journals and to be left alone.  However, this year offers one of the most important reasons than has ever been offered.  That is because, beyond the selection of a President-Elect and At-Large Directors, members are being asked to vote on the petition noted above.

This petition marks one of the most daring changes to ACS structure ever.  The Council already has ratified aspects of this petition and the membership is required to vote on the aspects of the petition that affect the ACS Constitution.  Because of the complexity around this petition, the Membership Affairs Committee has offered many sessions to answer all questions posed by members.  Unfortunately, some bad information is being passed on by some and it is vital that all members have accurate answers to their questions.  Thus, I wanted to use this month's "Council Corner" to help in that process.

This petition welcomes undergraduate students, now known as Student Affiliates, to be Student "Members".  The petition also helps to bring the Society's membership admissions policies into this multidisciplinary age of chemistry.  However, there will still be admissions guidelines in place and not just anyone can be a member.

Retired Chemists Meeting/YCC Poster Session

FRIDAY, October 24, 2008

THE WISHING WELL
1190 Chili Avenue at I-390

Poster Session: 11:00 a.m.  Luncheon at 12 noon

Introduction to Hydrogen Technology
R. Press, K.S.V. Santhaman, M. Miri, A. Bailey, and G. Takacs

The authors will discuss their new book on hydrogen as an incredible fuel with an emphasis on the sources of renewable energies and the issues related to global warming.  The technical aspects of hydrogen for power generation will be discussed.  The fundamentals of electrochemistry, acid-base reactions, organic chemistry, polymers, thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, photochemistry, and plasma chemistry are covered to develop a foundation for an understanding of renewable energy and hydrogen technology.  Topical discussions on clean energy sources, theories of different fuel cell operations, hydrogen infrastructure, and the introduction of devices that employ hydrogen form the basis for hydrogen technology.

Prior to lunch, YCC members will present research posters to the retired chemist audience and their peers. See the YCC information below if you would like to participate and submit an abstract.

Snacks (cheese, crackers, and vegetables) will be served throughout the poster session.

Luncheon will be a buffet at $15 ($10 for students).
For reservations, call Lew Allen at 585-586-9983 or at
lallen10@rochester.rr.com by Monday, October 20.  Spouses, Guests and Friends are welcome.

Rick Duncan

Younger Chemists CommitteeYCC Logo

The Rochester Younger Chemists Committee (YCC) is a subcommittee of the American Chemical Society (ACS).  The goal of YCC is to develop programs and activities relevant to scientists (of any field) under the age of 35.

This year's National Chemistry Week runs from October 19 - 25 and has the theme "Having a Ball with Chemistry" in honor of the Olympic games. The Rochester YCC has many activities planned for NCW, including the following events:

  • The YCC/RCC Poster Session Luncheon (October 24)
The 2nd annual YCC/RCC Joint Poster Session Luncheon will take place on October 24, 2008 at the Wishing Well (1190 Chili Avenue).  About 15 YCC members will present posters during the Retired Chemists Committee Luncheon.  Five RIT faculty members will give an invited talk on "Introduction to Hydrogen Technology" in which they will discuss their new book (now used as text at RIT) on hydrogen as an incredible fuel with an emphasis on the sources of renewable energies and the issues related to global warming.  The cost is $10 for students and post-docs and $15 for all others.  Spouses, guests, and friends are welcome. Carpooling will be available.
