| Chemistry and the Arts Lecture Series
The Rochester Section of the American Chemical Society is pleased to present a series of lectures highlighting the role of chemistry in the arts. These lectures feature experts who will explore this role of chemistry, from the dawn of civilization using completely empirical approaches to current times in which the most sophisticated methods of material science and analytical chemistry are applied to arts-related areas.
These lectures are free and open to the public. Each lecture will be followed by an informal reception.
A PDF Flier of the complete lecture series is available for downloading here.

Councilor's Corner
The next National Meeting of the American Chemical Society is fast approaching. In this article, I wanted to give my fellow Rochester Section members a heads up on the business coming before Council (that I am aware of) so that each of you can offer input if you wish.
There are four decisions and one Bylaw change being brought before Council at this meeting.
A Bylaw proposal coming forth would alter the dues structure for Affiliate Members of the Society. As some background information, Society Affiliates enjoy the same privileges as members, except that they cannot vote for or hold an elective position in the SOCIETY or its Local Sections and Divisions. They are eligible for the same meeting fees and publication subscription rates as members of the SOCIETY. It therefore seems appropriate that they should pay the full member dues. As of the last "official" membership count on December 31, 2006, there were 1290 Society Affiliates. A five-month delay is specified because dues notices are typically sent out up to four months in advance of the due date, and lead time is required for printing of revised materials.

| Volunteerism Award
Purpose: To recognize significant volunteer efforts of individuals who have served the Rochester Local Section of the American Chemical Society, contributing significantly to the goals and objectives of the Society through their Local Activities.
Nature and Establishment: The award consists of a plaque to be presented at the Rochester Local Section's Recognition Banquet by the Chair of the Local Section acknowledging the contributions of Society volunteers at the Local level. Dinner will be offered free of charge to the winner and a guest.
Rules of Eligibility: A nominee must be:
- A member of the American Chemical Society residing in the Rochester Local Section 6 county region.
- A member who has made significant contributions to the Rochester Region of the American Chemical Society.
Because the winner of this Local Section award will be nominated for the Northeast Region Volunteerism Award and, potentially, for the National ACS Volunteerism Award, it is important that the Local Section winner be recognized for a variety of activities including, but not limited to, the initiation or sponsorship of a singular endeavor or exemplary leadership in the Local Section, Region and on the National Level. Past and present members of the ACS Board of Directors and ACS staff are ineligible for this award.
Selection of Recipient: Nominations will be solicited from individuals of the Rochester Local Section. The awards committee will select the recipient. The award will be presented at the Recognition Banquet in the fall of 2007. The awards committee will nominate the winner to the Northeast Region of the American Chemical Society for their annual Regional Award for Volunteer Service.
Nominations: Please use the official Nomination Form (MS Word) to submit your nominee's information. Seconding nominations can be submitted using the Seconding Nomination Form.
The deadline for nominations for this year's award has been extended to September 1, 2008.

The technical aspects of hydrogen for power generation will be discussed. The fundamentals of electrochemistry, acid-base reactions, organic chemistry, polymers, thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, photochemistry, and plasma chemistry are covered to develop a foundation for an understanding of renewable energy and hydrogen technology. Topical discussions on clean energy sources, theories of different fuel cell operations, hydrogen infrastructure, and the introduction of devices that employ hydrogen form the basis for hydrogen technology. Student Trip Report
Dear Rochester Section of the American Chemical Society,
Last April, I attended the 235th American Chemical Society National Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, and it would not have been possible without your generous financial support. The Student Travel Grant allowed me to have a wonderful experience in the beautiful city of New Orleans, which I will always value as a unique opportunity.
At the convention I participated in the undergraduate research symposium by presenting a poster, "Studies of Fluorescence Quenching Mechanisms", which provided a great networking opportunity and presentation experience.
My professor, Todd Pagano, accompanied me to the conference and showed me many things that I did not know about the American Chemical Society and all of the things that it has to offer. I met many professionals in the field who gave me insight on my research project, as well as general tips on how to be a professional scientist myself. Moreover, I enjoyed learning from the other presentations at the conference, and what exciting developments are being made by fellow undergraduate researchers.
I will always cherish this experience, and I look forward to participating in undergraduate research to further my education, as well as to help increase my career networking skills by attending future conferences. I am sincerely grateful for this experience that was made possible by your financial help.
Thank you, Grace Kennedy RIT/NTID

Report from NERM 2008
A very successful Northeast Regional Meeting was held in Burlington, Vermont from June 28th to July 2nd.
As the Rochester Section's Representative on the Northeast Board of Directors (and Vice Chair for the Board), I was happy to attend as did some others from the Section, including Chair Richard Hartmann, Deb Janes, Tim Wilson, and Todd Pagano.
The Green Mountain Section, host for the meeting, did a great job in blending excellent technical presentations, an exhibition and social events, including a Comedy Night and tours of I.B.M., Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream and Green Mountain Coffee.
Preliminary numbers show that there was just under 600 attendees at the meeting and 442 technical presentations given during the meeting.
The event ended with the Awards Dinner aboard a dinner cruise on Lake Champlain. Rochester was well represented with three award recipients at this event:
- Deborah Janes and Timothy Wilson - Recipients of the 2007 E. Ann Nalley ACS Northeast Region Award for Volunteer Service to the American Chemical Soceity
- Todd Pagano - Recipient of the 2008 The Stanley C. Israel Regional Award for Advancing Diversity in the Chemical Sciences
Now is the time to begin thinking about attending the 2009 Northeast Regional Meeting. That meeting will be held in Hartford, Connecticut from October 7th through 10th, 2009 and will be hosted by the Connecticut Valley Local Section. If you cannot attend the ACS National Meetings, this is the next best thing at a much lower price!
The Rochester Section's Executive Committee has also given their initial intent to host NERM 2012, in celebration of the Rochester Section's 100th anniversary.
In the meantime, NERM 2010 is presently scheduled to take place in Pottsdam, New York and NERM 2011 is not spoken for as of yet.
The Northeast Board of Directors is still working hard to acquire a formal representative from each of the 19 Local Sections in the Northeast Region. If you have any questions about NERM 2008 or about the Regional Meetings in general, I would be glad to help you. Feel free to contact me at 477-4903, email me at d.richard.cobb@kodak.com
or write me at:
15-C Greenleaf Meadows Rochester, NY 14612.
Thank you! D. Richard Cobb Councilor
