    Hello and Happy New Year! It is an honor to be able to serve as Chair of our Local Section in 2007. I do hope you try to attend the Annual Dinner meeting that is taking place on Friday, February 9th at Rick’s Prime Rib House. I am excited that ACS President Katie Hunt will be coming to Rochester to meet and talk to our members. Let’s have a great turnout for this event!

    The Rochester Section is pleased to announce that 2007 ACS President Dr. Catherine Hunt will be the featured speaker at this year's Annual Dinner Meeting. Please join your fellow members on Friday, February 9, to hear Dr. Hunt's vision for the future of the ACS and to witness the "gavel passing" from 2006 Chair Ben Miller to 2007 Chair Dick Cobb.

  • Retired Chemists' Meeting - January 31

    The next Retired Chemists' Meeting will be held Wednesday, January 31 at 11:30 am at The Wishing Well restaurant. The speaker will be Dr. Douglas Robello of Eastman Kodak Company. Doug's talk, "Whence Imaging Chemistry?" will highlight the role of the chemist in non-traditional imaging systems.

    The 52nd Annual Rochester ACS Section Undergraduate Research Symposium will be held Saturday, April 21st at RIT.

    Wanted: Rochester Section members who are enthusiastic about their field of chemistry. In 2007, we are hoping to offer six "Chemistry and Coffee" meetings where members can gather, have some coffee, and discuss a specific area of chemistry. We need six topics in 2007 and six people who we can call on to lead those discussions. If you are interested in leading one of these sessions, please contact 2007 Chair Dick Cobb at d.richard.cobb@kodak.com

  • Joint Event with Corning ACS Section - June 23
  • Rochester Section Members are invited to join with their fellow ACS Members from the Corning Section for a day at the Corning Museum of Glass on Saturday, June 23.

    This 1-day event will enable members from the two Sections to socialize, enjoy a couple of speakers, and have a nice time visiting the Corning Museum of Glass.

  • Women Chemists Travel Grants
  • The Eli Lilly & Company is sponsoring a program to provide funding for undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral women chemists to travel to scientific meetings in 2007 to present the results of their research. Grants may be used for registration, travel, and accommodations, and are restricted to meetings held within the United States.

    Only U. S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible. Applications should be limited to one per research group. Grants will be awarded with preference to the following order: (1) any applicant who will be making her first presentation (regardless of format) at a national or major meeting, (2) graduate or postdoctoral applicants who have not presented at a national or major meeting since leaving undergraduate school. Women who have received a prior award under this program are ineligible.

    Applications must be received by February 15, 2007, for meetings between July 1 and December 31, 2007. For application and more information visit the WCC Web site or write wcc@acs.org.

  • "Forgotten Genius" - Dr. Percy Julian

    The National ACS, in cooperation with NOVA, is sponsoring a reception, preview screening, and program celebrating the premiere of “Forgotten Genius”, NOVA's Film Biography of Dr. Percy Julian.

    Born in 1899, the grandson of slaves, Julian overcame Jim Crow segregation and a daunting series of racial obstacles to earn advanced degrees at Harvard and the University of Vienna. He went on to become a chemist of international stature and the first African-American chemist ever elected to the National Academy of Sciences.

    NOVA's presentation of "Forgotten Genius" will air on PBS stations on February 7, 2007.
