Fall 2011

Greetings!

Just as Lenny Zakim lived his life, The Lenny Zakim Fund brings people of all religions, classes, and races together to create community and repair the world.  The LZF Institutes and Seminars are valuable networking opportunities for our grant recipients; the Award Ceremony joins our donors together with the organizations LZF supports in a beautiful celebration. But perhaps the most important and inspirational connections are made during LZF site visits, where effective due diligence engages donors and volunteers directly with community grant applicants.

What is it like for a donor to get really involved with The Lenny Zakim Fund? Please read Carol Kanin's story and learn what this powerful experience means to her.  Last year, our visits resulted in over 60 grants and $450,000 to worthy organizations.  Please help us continue making more grants possible with a gift to the LZF.  Thank you for your support and for the opportunity to make a positive difference in people's lives.

Thank you!

   Best regards,

Susan's Signature

The Lenny Zakim Fund:
What We Do & Why
Founded by Boston's late civil rights leader, LZF believes positive social change can be created by small, effective grassroots organization
that are often overlooked by large foundations, government agencies, and major donors.  That is why it is our mission to identify, listen to, support and connect grassroots community organizations that are bridging communities and transforming lives.

LZF Institute
LZF Institute Oct 2011
The LZF community at an Institute.
"Enriching, complex and relevant" was how one participant described the last LZF Institute, on October 14, 2011.  Current and former LZF grant recipients gathered at the John Hancock Hotel & Conference Center to learn from Barry Dym, BU Institute for Nonprofit Leadership and Management  and Shaheer Mustafa, Department of Children and Families.  Barry presented Succession Planning and Management Transitions, and Shaheer presented Managing Up, Down and Around.  Many thanks to LZF Board Member Elaine Sager and the Sager Family Foundation for chairing and sponsoring the Institutes!

My First Site Visit

LZF volunteer and donor, Carol Kanin, shares her thoughts on being in the community as an LZF site visitor.

Women of Means
Dr. Roseanna Means treating a patient

I've been involved with LZF since its formation, and I was so honored when I was first asked to become a site visitor. I just showed up at my first site visit, unsure of what to expect, do, or say. Luckily Susan Rothman (LZF Board President) was there. She led the visit, and I was able to listen and observe.

We were visiting Women of Means, a group that provides free healthcare to homeless women and children. I listened to Dr. Means and learned so much about her goals, passion, and needs. Right after that, we went to the Hull Lifesaving Museum. I couldn't figure out why we were going to see people building boats. But after meeting the young men who were part of the Maritime Apprentice Program (MAP), I understood how the youth there were building more than boats-they were gaining skills and education to build their lives. I was very moved and quite in awe.

I had no idea what to do that day, but after joining LZF on these two amazing visits, I was hooked.   The way LZF donors are able to get involved to see the work in real time is invaluable to understand the impact that LZF is making. LZF is not the typical foundation-it gives small amounts in a very thoughtful way to make a big difference
