Greetings! Please help me congratulate our own Dona Paulus who was voted runner up in the Volunteer category of the Union's Best of Nevada County competition. Dona is going into her sixth year as a key volunteer in the Cat Adoption Room. At the end of 2011, she had logged in 1,335 hours caring for and adopting out cats and kittens AnimalSave has rescued. She volunteers almost everyday of the week, including coming in on Sundays to medicate or give injections to some of our charges. When Debra is out of the office, Dona keeps things on track. She also steps up to take lead roles in all our fund raising events. Dona has been instrumental in adopting out the highest number of cats and is especially good at promoting some of the older or more difficult ones. Someone will come in to "just look" and by the time Dona is finished with them, they are walking out with a cat - - sometimes two! Her "match making" instincts serve her well in ensuring the best fit between person and feline. We are proud of Dona and all our wonderful volunteers. In 2011, volunteers donated 22,156 hours of their valuable time to help AnimalSave help the animals. That is equal to almost eleven full-time equivalents. Thanks to each and every one of our volunteers for all they do for the animals. For the animals, Carolyn Executive Director |

Cat of the Month - Danny Boy
Danny Boy, or DB as he is affectionately known around the cat room, is a character. He's chatty, friendly, and very large. He's tolerant of the other cats in the room but prefers a home with no other felines. He's 5 years old and seems to be asking us why he's still here! We know DB's person is out there...come on in and take him home!
For current information on all our available cats please click here.

Dog of the Month - Kenai
Kenai is a gorgeous 8 years old, spayed German Shepherd mix (mix unknown). She is current on her shots, heartworm negative and on preventative. She is very active and loves to go for truck rides and walks. She's very protective, strong, and playful so needs an experienced dog person to be her alpha. She's very affectionate once she gets to know you. Kenai is ok w/ indoor cats but will chase outdoor cats. She is not ok with dogs or young children. Kenai does well with kids over 15ish.
Call Kenai's foster mom, Stacie, at 530-478-1709 for more information.

How to Communicate with Your Dog - Part II
Start by understanding the value of dog eye contact. Consider how you feel when someone stares at you directly rather than uses normal eye contact standards. Just as you find it confronting, dogs also feel confused and threatened by direct head-on staring because it is a threat stance for them. A dog that looks away in this situation is actually being polite (or submissive) and is seeking to avoid confrontation.
Look at your dog's posture. The ways in which a dog holds its body can tell you a great deal about its mood and emotions. Many of the signals will be subtle and it can take some time to learn all of its expressions but it is well worth the effort. Here are some of the most common positions to know:
- Confident stance: A dog that is feeling confident will stand tall, have its tail up and probably wagging slowly, its ears will either be pricked up or relaxed, and it will generally look relaxed. Its eyes will have smaller pupils as they are also relaxed.
- Bowing: Facing you and with head and chest dipped low to the ground to the ground, front legs splayed out, and with rear end and tail up is a clear invitation to play. This is known as the "play bow". It can be mistaken by owners as an attack stance but it clearly denotes playtime.
Next month - more dog posture

Happy Tails
After being ignored by their mom at 5 weeks old, Copper, Buzz, and Louie (formerly Sleepy) are enjoying their new lives with their forever families. Thank you to foster moms Andrea and Sandy for raising these happy healthy little pups.

Children have been requesting donations to be made to AnimalSave instead of birthday presents. Now, cats are doing the same!
Lilybelle first came to AnimalSave as a tiny 6 week old kitten being given away at KMART. Now 8 years old, Lilybelle enjoys having her photo taken around the home and in spite of all the fancy beds, prefers to sleep in a shoebox! She was adopted by Deane and Pat Dvoracek in May 2004 who made a donation to us in honor of Lilybelle's 8th birthday.
