Hello Everyone,

We just got back from the Moe Norman Memorial - had a great time with everyone and the weather was absolutely perfect.  Could not have drawn up better days for the event.  (Please see below for more details, results, etc..)

This is the time of year most golfers start winding down (except for those lucky southern climate golfers) and start preparing for the winter months.  Interesting how most good golfers spend the winter building their games for the next year - getting ready for the next season, making changes in their swing, etc.  Our practice tip this etip and the upcoming webinars will focus on what we can do to get our golf games ready for the winter and setting us up for the best year possible next season.  See the practice tip below and the upcoming webinars schedule (also below) for more information.
Spreading the word contest - WINNER!

Thank you for your help in spreading the word about Moe Norman's simple and effective swing and good luck!
The 4th Annual Moe Norman Memorial Results

GGA header
It's hard to believe it's been 4 years since we said goodbye to Moe.  We are proud and honored to annually host the Moe Norman Memorial Outing in his honor.  We always have a great time with fellow Moe fans, this year was no different.

This years event was held 2 weeks ago at our facility at Eagle Creek Golf Course in Orlando, FL.  Included with all the participants was Moe's brother Rich and Moe's nephew Tim.

Friday night was our "social event" when we had our annual "shaking" hands and telling stories get together.

Saturday started with clinics held by Todd and myself (Tim) - Todd giving tips on the long game, and I gave some new tips on putting - hopefully it helped all those heading to the golf course that afternoon.

After lunch, the participants teed it up in a scramble type format.
Results:

1st Place - 61
    Randy Brown
    Murray Gunn
    Jeff Turner
    Matt Dillon

2nd Place - 62

Closest to Pin
    #8 - Dave Gray - 2'9"
    #17 - Randy Brown
That evening we had a dinner for everyone... a GREAT time socializing and passing Moe stories around!!

Sunday, we held a "shamble" type format.  In this format, everyone tees off, the group takes the best drive and then each player plays the hole out with his own ball.  The score is the 2 low net scores per hole total.  It is a lot of fun - and everyone seemed to really enjoy the shamble type format.

Day 2 - Shamble

1st Place - 116
    Rich Norman
    Randy Brown
    Matt Dillon
    Jeff Turner

2nd Place - 118
    Jim Wendling

We want to thank all those who attended our annual event and thank all those for honoring Moe with us!!  Please see future etips for our next Moe Memorial - probably going to be held the summer of 2010 back in Canada....

Thank you for Before and After
This feature alone is worth the subscription. Today I went to the range and worked on only one thing, Setup. I am still struggling with the ball placement as noted in my other post but I did see one major improvement. Watching the B and F, I realized I was making my lead arm too straight through my hand, lifting the axis up jut as Todd had noted in those videos for other players.

Since I have a habit of topping the ball and then immediately overcompensating by striking down and behind the ball, this was a revelation. Just by lowering the axis of the club and taking a more natural grip I found myself striking it consistently. The change amazed me so much I was almost looking around to see who hit that ball because it surely couldn't have been me.

Thanks Todd.

Tim Graves
Practice Tip:

Getting an Early Start for Winter Practice

by Tim Graves

Question - when do you think good players (tour players, etc..) work on their golf games?

For most, they spend their off-season, winter months working on their weaknesses - working to improve their games.  And for many, they aren't spending their time in Florida or Southern California - they are just like you and me, they are spending their time at home - many with snow on the ground - working on their games... now the "million dollar" question - how???   How do you work on your game without spending hours and hours hitting balls on the range?

This etip will be a start of our winter training series.  Between the etips, webinars and online instruction, we will work with you to set up training that will enable you to work on your game throughout the winter months - so when you begin playing next year (in a few months) you'll be ready to play your BEST GOLF EVER and won't struggle early in the year trying to "repair" your "bad habits".

Before we get into swing / golf game issues - we need to talk about conditioning a little.

We are far from experts when it comes to conditioning - would recommend consulting a local trainer or therapist, and will recommend to work as much, if not more, on flexibility vs. strength.

Flexibility in the hips, shoulders, back, elbows, wrists.  The more flexibility the easier to hit fundamental positions consistently and the more power/speed that can be created.  Also, the more flexibility - the less chance for injury.  Our system is much easier on the back on other areas of the body, but as with any physical activity, there will be stress on joints, etc..  Winter is a great time to work on flexibility / strength training.

Next - we need to start focusing on the model (again or for the first time).  Fall/winter is the perfect time to study the model again - or continue to study the model.  Do you know what a good grip is?  Do you know what is a good set up?  Do you know how wide the stance,  where the ball position, etc..should be.  It is time to start refreshing our focus on the model.  Moe's model isn't difficult, but needs to be done correctly do get the desired results.

It is very easy to "slip" from the model a little during the golf season as we are more worried about results than fundamentals... fall/winter is time to get back to perfect fundamentals.  Even the best players in the world will go back to their basic fundamentals in the off season.  It is true, the better your fundamentals, the better you will play - those with the best fundamentals are the best players.

The best place to review / study our fundamentals is in our Total Game Overview and our 7 Principles of Golf Improvement.  I strongly recommend our Total Game Overview - What the Moe Norman Swing is About to anyone who is interested in the single axis swing.  No matter what other material you have (other than the GGA), if you haven't studied our Total Game Overview - you DO NOT have the material you need to learn the fundamentals of Moe's swing.  If you have studied our Total Game Overview and want advanced material - we recommend our 7 Principles of Golf Improvement.
You can see a lot more about the material at:  http://swinglikemoe.com/index.php?customernumber=62924043093161&pr=TGOV_Videos

Next, let's start working / reviewing the first fundamental - the grip.

Let me tell you what I did to figure out the grip.

In 1996, I decided to make the change to Moe's swing - after watching Todd and Moe and needless to say, was very impressed, I decided to work on my swing to become more consistent and a better player.  I was already a top amateur in the country, but was about to make the "jump" to the professional rank and knew I needed a more consistent and "stronger" game.

The first fundamental I "strongly" needed work on was my grip.  My grip was very strong, which promoted a closed club face at impact and inconsistent ball striking, especially under pressure.  To all those out there that think their grip is good - I will tell you now that over 75% of our students who come to our schools need some type of grip work.  Those that have studied Natural Golf and the "big grip theory" typically have a very weak grip causing lack of leverage angles and lack of distance, inconsistent hits, and many other issues.  Check you grip - it is the most important fundamental and typically needs the most work...

Mine needed the work - but how do you work on your grip over the winter when you can't hit a lot of balls.  First, I worked with Todd (and Moe) to determine what a good grip was.  What was I looking for - how could I tell if I had a good grip or not.   And needless to say, I'm not a very patient guy... I wanted to get the grip down quick.... so I could work on other things.

After struggling to make the change for a couple of weeks (reverting back to my "old" grip again and again) Todd decided to make a model grip for me.  Something that I could put my hands on that would give me the perfect feel of the where my hands were suppose to go.  (Was made of a couple different grips cut and put together with tape and clothes hangers for mold... very "crude" but very effective).  I could only hold the club the correct way when I used this grip.

So, what did I do first - I took the mock up grip and went and hit balls.  Right, thin, top, right, shank.... not pretty... that is an understatement - VERY UGLY.  In fact, I was hitting a shag bag to practice and pretty much shanked all but a few of the golf balls.... VERY UGLY and VERY DISCOURAGING.   I thought about quitting trying to fix my grip, but knew the importance.

So, as any good student would do, I went back to my instructor (Todd) and told him the grip wasn't working - something was wrong with the club.  After a "nice debate" about the grip, I decided to take a different approach.

I knew the problem was the feel - the grip felt terrible to me because I couldn't square the face at impact - I only knew how to do that with a strong grip, not a good grip.  So how was I going to get feel over the winter months.

I decided to take this approach.  I would hold the club in my hands, waggle the club, hit an impact bag, hit wiffle balls inside, anything that I could do to gain feel, but all would be with the proper grip - I wouldn't do anything with a golf club in my hand that didn't have the proper grip.

To be honest, I think the best practice I had was sitting in front of the TV watching football games with the grip / club in my hands.  I would hold in front of me, waggle a little, turn/twist, etc.. in the hands, just get the feel of the club face with a proper grip.

I would also sit on my exercise bike (every morning......) with the grip training club in my hands.  Meaning at least 1/2 hour every day I was holding the club with a good grip.  I would waggle, twist/turn, etc.. a little to get good feel of the club with a good grip.

I did this for a couple of months..and it really worked.  I'd be lying to you if I told you I never had grip issues again, but they have always been very minor compared to the grip I had in '96 and before.  (In fact, the other day I was looking at an old newspaper article of me in one of my amateur events in 1995 - it was with a driver in my hand at set up - the grip was terrible...  amazing I could play at all with that grip....)

So, what can you do to start your winter training.  As I tell all our students at our schools, make sure your grip is "perfect".  And given that it can change over time - you need a way to check it often and easily.    Exactly why Todd created our Grip Training Club - hopefully most of you have it by now as there is no question it is the most important training tool we have - start the 1.5 drill with the club.  Work as I did - create ways to put the club in your hand any time you can, waggle the club, 1/4 or 1/2 swing the club - just hold the club up with the proper grip - get the PERFECT feel of a golf club with a PERFECT GRIP!!   The earlier your start this training, the further ahead you will be - NO QUESTION!!   Start NOW!!

More information about our training grip club and a video about why it's such a valuable tool:   http://swinglikemoe.com/index.php?customernumber=62924043093161&pr=Training_Grip_And_Club

More information about the 1.5 drill:  Please go to www.knowmoe.com and review July Webinar.

Our next etip we'll continue with our Winter Training focus.  Hopefully by then you are actively working on your exercises/stretching, etc.. reviewing Moe's model,  and have started to work on the PERFECT grip.
