Tiger's Knee - What we can learn from Tiger's knee injury. by Tim Graves, PGA
|
After the US Open last week, obviously has been a lot of talk
about Tiger's knee. We have received quite a few questions as how Moe's
swing affects the knees (and rest of body), what is the difference, what can we
learn from "Tiger's Knee".
First - let's talk about what happened to
Tiger's knee. As most of you may have already read/heard, Tiger hurt
his lead knee and has struggled the past couple of months with rehab. He now
must undergo additional surgery to repair his lead knee. The issue is how
did Tiger's swing hurt his knee, or, if the swing didn't do the original damage,
why is his current swing aggravating the knee.
You first must
understand a couple of points about a conventional golf swing (like Tiger's) and
all golf swings. As I go through this discussion, I will refer to our video on
our home page of our website at www.swinglikemoe.com -
titled "Why Don't Tour Player's Swing Like Moe, You Might Be Surprised" -
you might want to review that now and I will refer to different points of
the video. You can also go to: http://youtube.com/watch?v=L9T4I3ATfy8 (Same
video on Youtube).
Stop Time Frames into the Video clip and
Explanation:
0.50 (50 seconds into the video clip)- You will see Tiger's
Swing and explanation from Todd about two plane swing.
1:40 - You will
see Tiger's impact position. Notice - at impact, his lead shoulder pulls
out (to the left), his lead hip dramatically rotates(to the left); all requiring his lead knee to straighten
(lead knee (left knee) snaps straight as many have described..)
This
impact position is common to all conventional golfers who are able to get the
club on the "proper" impact plane to hit a straight ball (or slight draw).
Although not as forceful on the lead knee as Tiger's swing (Tiger swings
faster than most) - this type of position is still required by most conventional
golfers to hit the ball straight.
Reason - physics shows when force is
created toward the golf ball, the lead arm will straighten from the lead
shoulder to the golf ball. Forming a straight line from the lead shoulder
to the club head. It has been shown the average golfer puts up to 1 ton of
force toward the ball at impact.... the lead side will straighten out from the
shoulder to club head.
Problem with Conventional Golf - The golfer is
TOO CLOSE to the ball. He/She doesn't have enough room
from the lead shoulder to the golf ball for the lead arm to create a straight
line from the shoulder to the ball and keep the shoulder square to the ball -
the shoulder MUST pull out, which will cause the lead knee to typically
straighten at impact. Other problems that occur - stress is placed on the
lower and mid back (why 70% of golfers over 50 years of age have chronic back
issues) and stress will be placed on other areas of body like the neck, hips,
etc.. This is a CAUSE/EFFECT relationship - as the lead shoulder pulls out
to create the needed distance to the golf ball, the lead side will pull out
causing the lead knee to straighten.
For most golfers - this
will not only cause added stress to the body, but also cause the swing plane to
come over the top or in other words, from outside - in. This is why most
golfers slice, top, pull, etc.. golf shots and have inconsistent swings - their
lead shoulder pulls out and they come over top the plane.
2:00 - Now look
at Moe's Set Up. First thing you notice when comparing to conventional
(Tiger's) swing is the distance to the ball. Moe is considerably further
from the ball at set up. His lead arm is already stretched out to the ball
- the same position is arm will be at impact.
2:25 - Moe's Impact
Position - Focus on these areas -
1st - There is a straight line from
Moe's shoulder to the ball at impact - same as his set
up. 2nd - His lead shoulder HAS NOT
pulled out to hit this position - he had ENOUGH DISTANCE to the ball at set up
to get back to this position without pulling the shoulder
out. 3rd - His hips are turned at
impact, this allows his arms to get through
impact. 4th - **** His Lead Knee
is FLEXED at impact - he DOES NOT have the stress on his lead knee as
conventional golfers. *** 5th -
He also has minimal stress on his back, shoulder, neck, etc.. at impact as he
does not have to create twisting and turning to get back to impact.
This
is what is referred to as FACING BALL AT IMPACT.
You notice Moe's impact position is the same as his starting (set up)
position.
So why did Tiger's knee get worse the past couple of
years?
Reason - from our research and from what we have seen, as Tiger
changed instructors a couple of years ago, he has gotten closer and closer to
the ball. In fact, the film we used for this video is old film with
Tiger's swing from his previous instructor. His current instructor has him
even closer to the ball. This distance requires Tiger to spin even harder
at impact to get his club on plane. Also, when Tiger was younger he
used to twist his lead foot at impact (would spin out slightly) - he had stopped
doing this the last couple of years - adding more stress to the lead knee.
So, what does Tiger need to do?.... to me seems pretty obvious.
1st -
Needs to get his knee fixed and take some time off to heal.
2nd - He needs to
revamp his swing and get away from the ball - he must work on facing the ball at
impact and take the stress of his knee, back, etc.. His knee is bad now,
it is only time until his back has problems, etc..
He will not be the
first professional to work on facing ball at impact - there are many. To
name a few (in recent news)- Miquel Jimenez, Scott Verplank, Rocco Mediate,
Craig Parry, there are many more. Watch their swings the next time you
see them on T.V. - watch how they stand further from the ball then the average
golfer, watch how they work on facing the ball at impact with their shoulders,
knees and feet.
Conclusion - Facing Ball at Impact is a MUCH
less stressful effect on the body. It is a position all golfers of all
ages should work to acquire and will help prevent injury and PROLONG
golf longevity for all golfers. But, one must first get further
from the ball than most conventional golfers to be able to face ball at
impact. Without a proper set up (distance from the ball) - it will be very
difficult, if not impossible to face ball at impact.
To see proper
distances to the ball at set up and the proper set up positions - please refer
to our Posture and Stability Etip on the website.
Tiger once described Moe as "One of two
golfer's who truly owned their swing" - maybe he will take some
swing advice from Moe and learn to
Face Ball at Impact and protect that knee.
If you would like more information
on facing ball at impact, proper set up, proper grip, getting the club on plane
- swinging like Moe - we strongly recommend to start with our Total Game
Overview - What the Moe Swing is all About - this is our core
instruction. I will say it again - if you don't have this
instructional information - you are missing a KEY component to swinging like
Moe.
If you would like our advanced
instruction - please refer to our 7 Principles of Golf Improvement.
To start / continue your path to
great golf, and golf you can play until your 100... don't we all want to play
