eHomily  by Pastor Ron...

Would you agree with me that life would be a lot easier if it were temptation-free? But it is not to be. So we have to learn to deal with temptations-at least, this side of heaven.

The Apostle John says there are three great areas of temptation in this world for which we should be aware: "The cravings of sinful man, the lust of the eyes and the boasting of what he has and does" (the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life-KJV 1 John 2:16). Though we will not all face the same temptations, we will all face these same temptations. You will be tested in each of these areas though your temptations may not be like someone else. What tempts one person may not bother another person. It is wise, as the philosopher said, to know yourself. Be aware of your own areas of vulnerability and limitations. Learn to set up firewalls to protect your inner person from these targeted attacks.

Awhile back there was a terrible train wreck in Fort Worth, Texas, in which two railroad workers were killed. A runaway locomotive engine crashed into a parked train. The renegade rig traveled miles down the track unnoticed and unattended. The problem is that someone had forgotten to set the brake.

In our lives we have to learn to set the brake. If we fail to do so, then the smallest temptations in areas of weakness may turn our lives loose to the point that we are out of control and other people are hurt.

Remember: Temptation is not sin, but succumbing to it is. Billy Graham has said, "The sin is when you use the temptation for giving in to sin. None of us should place ourselves in a position to be tempted. Satan will always attack when and where we are the most vulnerable."

So be wise to the ways of temptation. Prepare to face spiritual warfare every day fully dressed in the protective armor of God and with a view to victory (Ephesians 6:10-18). Be confident in God's promise that "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it" (1 Corinthians 10:13). That's a promise we should claim!

Devotedly yours,

Pastor Ron
