The Book of 1 John is written to give assurance. John says, "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life" (1 John 5:13).
If you don't have certainty that you are a Christian, it is usually one of four reasons:
- You have no basis of assurance, or
- You are out of fellowship with God because of unconfessed sin, or
- You have neglected over time the spiritual disciplines (such as worship, Bible Study, fellowship, prayer), or
- You are having problems taking God at His Word.
The Book of 1 John gives assurance but it also exposes false assurance. My desire in our verse-by-verse study of the Book of 1 John over the summer months is that it will bring all of us to certainty of our salvation. I would ask that you open your heart to the Spirit of God as together we dig into the Word of God. If you lack certainty of your salvation God will guide you to the reason and the solution. Of that you can be certain...
This Sunday we will study 1 John 1:1-10 on the subject of Walking in the Light. See you then-
Blessed Assurance,
