When I was a child I loved the story Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie. In this fanciful tale we are introduced to the pirate, Captain Hook, an arch-villain of Peter Pan. You will remember that Captain Hook lives in terror of a crocodile which has already devoured the pirate's right hand and taken such a liking to the taste that he continually stalks the old sea captain hoping to get a second-helping.
In fact, Captain Hook has survived only because the crocodile also once swallowed an alarm clock and its continual ticking warns of his approach. One day the pirate laments the inevitable day when the timepiece will run down, and the dreaded croc will get him at last. So the only thing which frightens him more than the ticking of the clock is the thought that it will stop ticking.
Though we may not all share the fear of a crocodile but we do have, at least, one thing in common with the anxious pirate. Sometimes we are bothered by the fact that time keeps on marching, other times by the fact it will one day stop. It will not tick forever-and then it will be over.
If the croc represents for us our inevitable demise, then we had better understand that we cannot kill the croc or turn back the clock but we can redeem the time. Paul says as much-"Be very careful, then, how you live -not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil" (Ephesians 5:15-16). So learn this:
Make the most of every day-
'cause time keeps ticking away...
