It's been more than a hundred years since the Titanic sailed from Great Britain headed to New York Harbor on its maiden voyage. At the time (1912), the Titanic was the world's largest ship, weighing 46,328 tons, 900 feet long, and with 3 anchors weighing more than 10 tons each. It employed a crew of 400, a hotel staff of 518 and could carry 2,433 passengers. The 159 furnaces burned 650 tons of coal a day. The ship had a complete gymnasium, heated pool, squash court, and the first miniature golf course-all below deck. Its amenities included opulent dining rooms with 24 hour service, an orchestra on the promenade deck, palm courts and gilded Turkish baths. Several of the wealthiest individuals in the world were on the passenger list for this internationally acclaimed voyage. The Titanic had been billed as one of two newly built "Unsinkable" ships and it was publicized around the world as the dawn of a new era in ship travel.
But, on April 14, 1912, the unthinkable happened to the "unsinkable." At 11:40 pm, the great Titanic struck an iceberg, ripping a 300 foot gash into the starboard side of the ship and exposing 5 of its 16 watertight compartments to an eruption of water. It would take 2 hours for the ship to succumb to the cold Atlantic sea and plunge 12,000 feet to the ocean floor. On that sad evening, more than 1500 lives were lost at sea.
One hundred years later there is a lesson I want you to learn from this. There's absolutely nothing in this world built by man that is unsinkable. Only a relationship with Christ is eternal and indestructible. If Jesus is at the helm as the captain of your ship, He will take you safely to the other shore. He will provide you a safe journey and enable you to weather the storms of life. Trust your life to Jesus for only He can do this.
Devotedly your Pastor,
Ron
