The Fruit of the Spirit Series - Galatians 5:22-23
What we have learned so far...
The 8th Fruit of the Spirit is gentleness. The word "gentleness" as found in scripture means "strength under control." Practically speaking, gentleness is choosing wisely how to respond to people rather than just reacting to them. This calls for a certain strength of character made available to us by the Holy Spirit. Though, as Christians, we have the resource for such, still we must remind ourselves, from time to time, of the requirement of this.
How often should we practice this disciplined response to life? The Bible says, "Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near" (Philippians 4:5). This is broadly inclusive, don't you think? So think about the people with whom you come into contact daily--how do you do on the gentleness scale?
What about people with whom you have a disagreement? Even then we must learn to have a restrained response for "a gentle answer turns away wrath but a harsh one stirs up anger" ( Proverbs 15:1). We should avoid an argumentative spirit at all costs. Wisdom teaches us that"anger does not accomplish the righteousness of God." Furthermore, scripture admonishes us to practice being "peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit...peacemakers who sow in peace (and who) raise a harvest of righteousness" (James 3:17-18).
Gentleness is the way of righteousness. Remember, Jesus says to His followers, "learn from me for I am gentle and humble in heart...(Matthew 11:29). May gentleness be identified in us even as it was in Jesus!
