eHomily  by Pastor Ron...

I suppose had you and I known Sparky when he was growing up we might have agreed with his classmates and teachers in our appraisal of him.  He was widely perceived by those who knew him best as a kid with little promise of future success in life.  He would likely have agreed with that evaluation of himself.  His low self-esteem was fed by some pretty compelling facts.  For example, he was a terrible student for all of his academic days.  He flunked every subject in the eighth grade.  In High School he failed Physics, Latin, Algebra and English.

He was uncoordinated and clumsy in sports.  Though he did manage somehow to make the High School golf team, he lost all of the contests to his competition and even lost the consolation match at the end of his senior season.

He did no better in the social arena of life.  Sparky was known to be awkward around others his own age.  It was not that others disliked him; it was, rather, that no one really cared that much for him.  He once said that he was surprised if any of his classmates even spoke to him outside of school hours.  He finished High School without ever asking a girl out on a date for fear of rejection.

So Sparky saw himself as a loser and with that most would agree...

There was one thing, however, that Sparky liked to do and fancied himself as pretty good at it (though he was alone in this assessment). He enjoyed art and would draw for hours nonstop, losing himself in a world of his own imagination.  During his senior year he actually submitted some cartoon drawings to the editor of the school yearbook but he was turned down.  Despite this rejection, he decided to pursue a career as a professional artist following High School graduation.

He wrote a letter to Walt Disney Studios and was invited to submit some samples of his work.  So he worked long and hard on some ideas for a new cartoon before sending it in to Disney.  After awhile, he received a notice that his proposal had been rejected by the studio.

Sparky decided at his point to begin to write himself and his experiences obliquely into his cartoons.  This autobiographical approach proved productive as he depicted a little boy loser and chronic underachiever.  The cartoon character would prove to be successful and would soon be known world-wide.

Sparky became known as Charles Schulz.  The cartoon he created, of course, was Peanuts, and the character who never succeeded in kicking a football was the beloved Charlie Brown.

I'm glad Sparky found what he was supposed to do in life.  May the same be said for each of us!

This Sunday we will honor our graduates as they stand on the threshold of their own journey of discovery.  We pray that God will guide them and give them wisdom in what they are called to do in life.

Blessings,

Pastor Ron
