You've heard the expression "a person can be so heavenly-minded that they are of no earthly good."  But is it true?

Listen to what C.S Lewis has said:

"If you read history, you will find that the Christians who did the most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next.  The apostles themselves, who set on foot the conversion of the Roman Empire, the great men who built up the Middle Ages, the English evangelicals who abolished the slave trade, all left their mark on earth, precisely because their minds were occupied with heaven.  It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this."   (Mere Christianity)

The thought of Heaven does not diminish, but enhances our earthly activity, for it weighs it with consequences for all eternity.  Suddenly, and not surprisingly, it truly counts how we live today since it directly affects life tomorrow.  A moment's decision may bear results forever.  This heavenly orientation gives reason for earthly attention.  It now matters how we live since in some sense it lasts.   And that which remains forever must be priced as important today!

British Scholar N.T. Wright points out something interesting about 1 Corinthians 15:58.  He says, "Paul, we remind ourselves, has just written the longest and densest chapter in any of his letters, discussing the future resurrection of the body in great and complex detail.  How might we expect him to finish such a chapter?  By saying, 'Therefore, since you have such a great hope, sit back and relax because you know God's got a great future in store for you?' No.  Instead, he says, 'Therefore, my beloved ones, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour is not in vain.'"   (Surprised By Hope)

The promise of Heaven, indeed, fuels the fire for our lives to burn bright for God today.  So should we fear that we might be so heavenly-minded that we will be of no earthly good?  No!  Our fear should be just the opposite.  If we do not live in the light of Heaven we will certainly not make a dent in Heaven or make a difference on this earth.  So carry close to your heart the knowledge of the Kingdom of Heaven.  It matters from here to eternity!

Blessings,

Pastor Ron
